Fiction. Historical Fiction. HTML:

The Tea Rose is a towering old-fashioned story, imbued with a modern sensibility, of a family's destruction, of murder and revenge, of love lost and won again, and of one determined woman's quest to survive and triumph.
East London, 1888-a city apart. A place of shadow and light where thieves, whores, and dreamers mingle, where children play in the cobbled streets by day and a killer stalks at night, where bright hopes meet the darkest truths.
Here, by the whispering waters of the Thames, a bright and defiant young woman dares to dream of a life beyond tumbledown wharves, gaslit alleys, and the grim and crumbling dwellings of the poor.
Fiona Finnegan, a worker in a tea factory, hopes to own a shop one day, together with her lifelong love, Joe Bristow, a costermonger's son. With nothing but their faith in each other to spur them on, Fiona and Joe struggle, save, and sacrifice to achieve their dreams.
But Fiona's dreams are shattered when the actions of a dark and brutal man take from her nearly everything-and everyone-she holds dear. Fearing her own death at the dark man's hands, she is forced to flee London for New York. There, her indomitable spirit-and the ghosts of her past-propel her rise from a modest west side shopfront to the top of Manhattan's tea trade.
Authentic and moving, Jennifer Donnelly's The Tea Rose is an unforgettable novel.

One of the best books I read this year. Wow! Finishing this book was the one thing I dreaded. The Tea Rose was a captivating, heartfelt, and engaging read. I was lost in this fascinating, atmospheric world of 19th century London, and would love to go back sometime and revisit the wonderful characters that Jennifer Donnelly created. There are great characters in this story that you will not forget easily, especially Fiona Finnegan, the central figure with great strength and fierce ambition. Very well written and keeps you guessing. Sometimes you can predict what may happen, but it keeps you hanging. Other things come as a complete surprise. ( )

Even though I re-read this book in Greek, my review will be in English.
I love Jennifer Donnelly's writing. With this book, I traveled back to the time at the end of the 19th century. It is a captivating, engaging, and heartfelt book. Historical fiction and, at the same time, it is a mystery plot. There are romance, action, murder, destruction, greed, ambition, and even revenge. There are great characters in this story that you will not forget easily, especially Fiona Finnegan, the central figure with great strength and fierce ambition. The strength of the human spirit and the redeeming quality of friendship is also thoroughly explored.

Donnelly has created a work of epic proportions, her characters are deeply three-dimensional, and you never know what is around the next corner. The combination of mystery and straight literature is very successful. Donnelly is truly a master storyteller. You can learn about the era. It is a page-turner. I couldn't put the book down; in one sitting, I read 478 pages.
I recommend reading this book. The Greek translation of the second book of the trilogy is 950 pages, but people have read the book before, saying it is good and another page-turner. I have 3-4 books to read before I read the second book of the trilogy. ( )

Fiona Finnegan is the eldest daughter of working class family in 1888 London. She works in the Burton Tea Factory filling tins with tea, dreaming of the day she and her boyfriend, Joe Bristow, can open their own shop. Her father becomes mixed up in unionizing Burton's and her mother accidentally runs into a notorious killer. This is just the first of many tragedies that will affect Fiona's life and future. She is forced to flee London, taking only her five year old brother Seamus. She decides to catch the first ship to America, where she will pursue her dreams, along with some revenge.

This is a big, epic story that reminded me of a larger than life soap opera. There's tragedy, revenge, and romance. I think there are a lot of historical inaccuracies here, but it didn't spoil the fun I had reading it. I started to think it was more of a historical romance than a family saga at some point, and while Fiona is portrayed as a woman who is determined to make it on her own, it's really rich men who help her overcome every obstacle. Nevertheless, I'm giving it a much higher rating than the Man Booker nominee I'm just finishing. Why? Because when Tea Rose was done I said, “I've got to pick up the next book in the series” and when I finished Hot Milk I said “thank goodness that's over”. Sometimes the brain just wants candy, not kale.
