Since Thomas Keneally's novel Schindler's Ark, and subsequently the Oscar-winning film, Schindler's List, there has been intense curiosity about the real Schindler survivors. Schindler's Legacy tells the remarkable true life stories of many of the Polish Jews saved from death in Nazi concentration camps. In their own words, and where possible in their own voices, they recount their barely imaginable war-time experiences, how their names came to be on the List, their attempts to rebuild their lives, their emotional reunions with Schindler many years later and the legacy that will stay in their families for generations. The interviews were definitely very different, but they were very similar at the same time. I have read many books of this nature, and to be totally honest, it was very difficult getting through this book. The writing was good and the interviews were interesting, but this book struck an emotional chord that no other book has twanged as great as this did. I had to read it in bits and pieces...I found myself having nightmares after reading some of the interviews. You definitely don't want to pick this book up before you go to bed.
Although the book really doesn't get much recognition (does the fact that there is no review tell you something?), this book is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in this topic. I have to say this is one of my favorite narrative books, even better than the more popular ones. ( )
