This was a pretty fabulous in the way more of Harvey's book always have been. Very supernatural, a little romance campy, but definitely a good storyline unfolding slowly. ( )

I love teen witch books, ok! Even more so if they have great female friendships and take place in Regency England. ( )

I wanted to like this because, well, Regency debutante witchcraft. But it was sadly all froth and no real meat, and not even in a fun and frivolous way. The Regency is heavy on the Georgette Heyer (and therefore rife with nobility, swooning and nonsense, and light on the mannered restraint of Austen, or even Kowal), the debutanting gets hijacked by Hogwarts Finishing School (allowing in-depth exploration of neither setting) and the witchcraft was full of just-because and fights with magical creatures occasionally so random I wondered if the GM had rolled up an encounter because there was a quota to be met. The cousins were charming, but I found them often too cutesy, and the romance was pretty straightforward. My biggest issue, though, was that the story seemed to be going in all sorts of directions at once, with the result that I never really had a sense of inexorable pace and tension. (The only reason I'm at all curious about the rest of the series is the hope that Gretchen might get to make out with Colette. But one glance at the blurb for the second book puts paid to that idea. Oh well!) ( )

I'm not the biggest witch fan--I tend to not enjoy the books featuring witches but I changed my mind for two reasons: 1) I've really enjoyed Claudia Gray's new [b:Spellcaster|12700790|Spellcaster (Spellcaster, #1)|Claudia Gray|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1341031433s/12700790.jpg|17832168] series which is about witches and 2) I love historical young adult reads. So I decided to give it a shot.

I really enjoyed A Breath of Frost. It was fun and had a lot going on so I never found it dull plot wise. I found though that there was too much detail or it would drag in descriptions so my mind would wander and I would miss important plot changes, causing me to have to flip back and reread a few bits to get a handle on what was happening. But once I did, I figured out what was going on.

I really liked all the characters. The cousins are a lot of fun to read about have each have unique personalities that makes reading about them enjoyable. A Breath of Frost mostly focuses on Emma though but there are bits and pieces of the other characters. I see that the rest of the trilogy will focus on a different cousin but still have the other two cousins present as was the set up in this book.

Overall: I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series. It was a lot of fun to read and is a refreshing plotline for the young adult genre. Fans of witches and historical fiction will love the blending of the two in this series!
