Each of the works in this anthology has two things in common; the writers were all prisoners in gulags (slave labour work camps in the Soviet Union) and each was published in Russian either during the lifetime of the author or posthumously. Each of the thirteen works was chosen because it offered a unique description of an aspect of life in the gulags. Each story is prefaced by a short biography of the writer, the circumstances behind their arrest, the gulag(s) where they were imprisoned, and the life they led after their release.
