Biography of a woman who dreams of being a librarian and the creates a way to bring books to everyone in her small town. Pierce County Library. 1st through 3rd grade

This is a heartwarming story about a woman who took it upon herself to bring books to people when she noticed a lack of libraries in the North Carolina city where she lived. This book is a great story about passion and sharing, and the importance of books and reading.

Summary: In the book, Miss Dorothy and her Bookmobile, deals with Miss Dorothy learning to appreciate that she is a real librarian although her methods may not be conventional. This book takes you through learning to accept the way you are and not be settled with stereotypes.

Personal Reflection: Throughout the book the illustrations were extremely beautiful. I also thought it was good, again because stereotypes are really hard for children to deal with. It is always something we need to work on to break children from their vicious cycle.

Classroom Extension: As a class, we could go and spend time working in the library in order to get a better understanding or we could donate books from home to bring diversity to the library. ( )

49 months - Beautifully illustrated and an enjoyable story. I always like reading books to O about people who love books. It's always nice to know you're not alone as a book lover. ( )

The big idea of this book s that if you only wish for the greener grass on the other side of the fence, then you may not notice or appreciate just how beautiful your own lawn is. I like this book because it encourages readers to think about different perspectives. Miss Dorothy often comments that she thought she would be "a real librarian, in a fine brick library, just like the one in the center of the square in her hometown." She fails to realize that a librarian is a librarian because of their love of books and wanting to share that love with other people; but eventually comes to the understanding that her town appreciates her and she develops a new understanding of what a librarian is. It encourages you to not be stuck with one stereotype and to be able to accept that not everything fits into a specific definition or category! I also think that the illustrations are a great complement to the setting and characters. Their warm, slightly washed-out colors and water-color style add to the laid back, country feel of the rural setting. They give the book a calm feel, as opposed to being brightly and vividly printed in bold contrasting colors. For example, on the fourth and fifth page, I actually believed I could almost feel the warmth from the sunset from the way the warm reds and cool blues were splashed across the ground and even reflected off of the car as they made their way into the mountains. The pictures definitely engaged me more in the text as I read. ( )
