Hi all,
Sorry for the lack of activity here. I'd forgotten that I created this group... very embarrassing.
I wanted to ask y'all which Indian authors you l like. I mostly read SciFi/Fantasy, and it seems to me that India has such a rich cultural/mythological heritage that some Indian guy should have written a decent fantasy series by now.
The only two Indian authors I know that write genre stuff are Samit Basu and Ashok Banker. Haven't tried reading Banker yet, but Basu's a decent enough author.
What do you guys think?

Haven't read any Indian genre stuff... no particular need I guess, though if you want Indian content within genre novels I've heard good things about Ian McDonald's "River of Gods". Its said to be pretty good. I just bought Vikram Chandra's "Red Earth and Pouring Rain" and it looks like it has some fantastic elements, though looks more like magical realism than anything else...
I really need to get caught up with my Indian reading, genre or not. Any suggestions?

River of Gods is on my to-read pile, got it a couple of months back. I'll have to look into Vikram Chandra's books, thanks for the tip.
I just found a link to an interesting looking discussion thread at SFFWorld.com, maybe we'll find some good suggestions there: http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9409

You may also want to consider Sagramanda by Alan dean Foster.
And, the recently published Sacred Games is pretty good as well.

I read Red Earth & Pouring Rain five or so years ago, and it didn't engage me much, I never did get to the end of it.
My recent read was Q & A by Vikas Swarup. I couldn't put this book down, I even read while I was trying to fall asleep. It's a well executed, well weaved, book.
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy is another good one.
I'd also recommend Amitav Ghosh.
