ability to search through threads and lists

I'd love to be able to go right to book that is named in a list or thread - rather than have to scroll through hundreds/thousands to find it

>1 EGBERTINA: If you're looking for a particular book on a particular page, maybe your browser's search function would be helpful? (For example, if you're working with a Windows computer, you could press CTRL-F and then type the book's title into the search box?)

You can, if the person posting about it uses a touchstone. Otherwise, there's no way. How would the site know which work the poster was referring to? As an example, if I do a site search for a work called "The Road", there are a couple of dozen on the first page of results, more if one doesn't consider subtitles.

If you are looking at a list, just clicking on the title should take you to the correct work.

Way way way back when, the touchstone list used to have to functions: 1 take you to the book page, 2 take you to the message it was mentioned.
Not sure when function 2 went away.

I'd love for it to come back.

Seems to have been May 2011 per: https://www.librarything.com/topic/116772#2714588

It does still take you to the topic. I often check when I finished a book, and can then find the right message even in a long topic if I want to know what I wrote at the time.

On the work page, there is a module for Conversations that lists threads About the work (designated with About touchstones). It also gives the number of ordinary touchstones, and links to them via a Mentions page listing them.

>7 paradoxosalpha: I was going to point to this feature too. And I do use it; though you still have to scroll through the whole thread.

I’ve learned that if you search by title, if the title is unique, you can pull up the same list in the drop-down feature to conversations; and when you choose that thread, it takes you to the exact post.

Try it with How to Keep House While Drowning

General response:

I know how to find the lists and the conversations about a book. I mean when i click on those, that it take me directly to the book.

For instance, When I record a book in a group, such as Roots, (yes, we get a several hundred/thousand list of touchstones. but i dont get taken to the book that i might want to find- i get taken to the thread and have to scroll through every message or touchstone and hope that my eyes are good enough to clearly see it.

how would this be useful to me? i sometimes make lists or participate in other lists. what if i want to find if i remembered to enter the book in the list? if i read it recently i just scroll to the bottom of my list, but if i read it awhile ago, how can i be sure if it is in the list?

same with the group talks. if it is at the end, just find the final message; but what if you want to find a book mentioned 6-12 months ago.

or what if it is not even your own book- and you just want to read what another person commented on that book in his/her thread? some of those threads can be quite an ordeal. some days that is fun, but not always.

>8 2wonderY: I must not be clear about this method. When I clicked on this link, i got the same huge long lists but not actually taken to the book in conversations.

link takes me to book. button for more mentions lists all the conversations in which it appears. one of those conversations is my post of today. another one was from 2wonderY a few days ago, but i never went directly to the post in which the book is mentioned. so, i know that is mentioned - but, i still have to go find it. 3 year from now, in a post that has, potentially, grown to 200 messages - how where could i locate the mention?

As >2 JacobHolt: says, use Ctrl-F or Command-F to search within a page.

>11 Aquila: okay. that seems to work. MAC users - that is command+F

>10 EGBERTINA: My method in visuals
1. Search the title in the site search box
2. The result shows Works by default, but you use the drop-down to choose Talk

3. You get the same list of threads that comes up on the Works page

4. but when you choose a thread, it takes you to the exact spot in the thread where the title is mentioned. No scrolling.

That same thing should happen from the work page. I made a note to check on that when we get to LT2-ifying the work page.
