Dear all,
I'm looking for a short story, or rather novelette, that I read in a (maybe Christmas-time themed) ghost story anthology some 3 years ago but cannot find again:
A young woman is staying with an old lady, whose house is peculiarly situated: there is a kind of elevated dell in back that can only be entered by an attic window. Looking out of a window, the heroine one evening observes a troupe of what she believes to be mechanical toys, little men on horseback and women in horse-drawn carriages (or maybe sleighs). The old lady's nephew(?) claims these "toys" to be his own handywork and invites the heroine to a show, however, she has to creep into the garret at night and watch the performance from the window, it is all very hush-hush, the old lady is not to know, etc. Later, finding an old photo album and recognizing one of the puppet's faces as that of a young girl that mysteriously disappeared some time ago, the h. realizes that the "toys" are, in fact, real people placed under some spell or enchantment by the nephew.
Does this ring a bell with anybody?

>1 Nooiniin: Not part of an anthology, but it reminds me quite a bit of The Doll's Eye. Probably not it, but figured I might as well throw it out there just in case.
