Englishman captured by a Breton lord and one of his daughters is ransomed to marry the lord in exchange for the father's freedom. Expecting a beautiful daughter (Daphne?), the plain daughter was sent instead. She is very plain spoken, short and not classically beautiful (a brown wren?).
He seems angry, always shouting/loud. She has to work to be accepted by his people as she is a foreigner, but she knows how to speak Breton/French and she knows about herbs and heals people. After the marriage she is later befriended by 2 of the servants.
The lord had a wife who had died in childbirth but he wants children of his new wife, and at first she just endures their lovemaking. The lord had a former mistress who he had set up in a house in the village and the wife discovered her by accident. She later conceived but miscarried and the lord's people blamed it on his former mistress who they ran out of her home. She only knew of this when she was recovering and walking that way and saw the state of the house.
Later they fell in love and he had admitted that he was willing to do anything to get rid of her father as he was fed up on him whining?
I think the husband had gotten sick and she had healed him as well.
I believe there was a picture of a castle on the book cover.
