I need help remembering the title of a novel we read some years ago. The title was the name of the homeplace where the elderly woman lived (It was an orchard but we can't remember what type). She had hired a caretaker who was recently released from some sort of institution. On his way to his new job, somehow he came up an infant that was abandoned....can't remember the details....he took it home to his apartment over the garage at the home place where he was beginning his new job. He didn't intend to keep it at first, but every day he got deeper and deeper into the situation that he didn't have the emotional or mental resources to deal with. It was such a sweet book about how these three generations of unrelated lost souls became a family. Marvin and I were talking about it and would love to read it again, but can't remember the name. I think it was one word, and I think it was an adjective that described the home place. HELP!!!

I enjoyed this book, in spite of thinking I wouldn't. Quindlen did an excellent job on her theme of the generous spirit we can find in those who love and need love. It was a tender but not maudlin story that allowed its characters to live on the page according to their own lights.

if those who know my usual reading habits heard me say these things about this novel, they'd probably roll their eyes in disbelief. I'll go further -- I'd recommend the novel to those same friends!
