I cannot remember the name of the book or author, but I can tell you almost the entire story. PLEASE help me find the name of this book. It may be YA, but I love the story and want to find a copy of the book.
An American boy named Tracy finds himself in Turkey when his father, who is in the air force, is assigned there. Tracy learned how to scuba dive (double hose regulator) to recover from an illness. He has a collie dog named Nosy. Tracy becomes friends with the Turkish girl next door and she introduced him to her 'holy man' teacher Hodja (sp?) who is also friends with some of the air force personnel and liberates a row boat and gets Tracy's tanks filled with air.
The Turkish girl mentions stairs she saw underwater while swimming off the bluff after a recent earth quake. The Hodja and the girl take Tracy out in the row boat to look for the stairs, which they find. Tracy dives, and fins the ruins of a minoan palace, a huge grouper he names Muggsie, an obsidian vase, a feeding tube for sacred snakes, and some other items. One has the snake on the side with the flower of Zeus in it's mouth.
Finding a broken hidden passageway in the palace ruins, Tracy eventually figures out where the other half is and enters the other half of the passage which is in the bluff underwater. There are doors to some chambers, and outside of them is a double headed ax blade in a groove in the stone. Tracy wraps his regulator hose around the ax head and investigates the chambers whioch turn out to be burial chambers for the minoan queen and king in crystal coffins. But the sea tide rushes in and the water movement causes the ax to cut one hose of the regulator, so Tracy is stuck underground and no one knows where he is except the dog Nosy who sits on the bluff and howls until the people figure out that is where Tracy is and dig for him, discovering the burial chambers and saving Tracy.
