This was a contemporary English novel - wryly comedic - the female narrator recalls this invitation, "I say old girl, would you care for a spot of the old rumpy pumpy?"as the paradigm turnoff invitation from her male peers.

Seconded, I have read this one; it's a mystery series by Rhys Bowen, set in the '20s, IIRC, and the main character is an impoverished girl who is 32nd in line for the British throne. Quite amusing!
