Near future Mil SciFi, as a cold war goes 'mutually assured destruction' hot.
Supposedly 700 years into the future but it doesn't really feel like it, Earth has space colonies within the solar system but they don't really play a role so far. The major difference is anti-aging and pre- or post-birth genetic treatments are real, and the world split into 2 blocs who went either the capitalist or a more communist way about who benefits (those who can afford it or serve one or more terms in the military for it, vs everyone with a solid dose of indoctrination 'for the common good').½

FROM BARNES & NOBLE: A DEAD STAR IS HEADED FOR EARTH...
THE SHIFT IN EARTH'S ORBIT WILL UNLEASH A NEW ICE AGE...
AND THIS SUMMER WILL BE OUR LAST.

THE NEWS BREAKS
Logan Willis's life is falling apart: he lost his job and found out that his wife is cheating on him all in the same day. Thinking that his world has ended, Logan checks into a hotel and turns on the TV to see that he's not far wrong—radio telescopes have detected mysterious signals coming from inside our solar system, and the source is moving toward us at over 500 miles per second. The media concludes that these signals must be of an alien origin. Still reeling from the news, Logan gets a phone call from his brother-in-law. Richard is talking crazy about the end of the world again, but this time he doesn't sound so crazy.

A DEADLY CONSPIRACY UNRAVELS
Meanwhile, Richard, who is an astronomer working with the James Webb Space Telescope, is at the White House briefing the president to announce what he and the government have known for almost a decade: aliens are not invading, a frozen ball of gas is. The so-called rogue star is predicted to make a near pass with Earth, disrupting our orbit and unleashing an ice age, the likes of which we haven't seen for millions of years.

WE'RE PUTTING A COLONY ON MARS
Government insider, Billionaire Akron Massey, has received a steady flow of funding over the past decade for his company, Starcast, to put a colony on Mars. Over the same period he's been using his personal fortune to create a colony closer to home where he plans to ride out the coming storm along with a thousand of the smartest people on the planet. Humanity will need seeds to plant in the ashes after the chaos clears.

AND WARS IGNITE
When the true nature of the threat becomes known, the nations of Earth prepare to fight over all the warmest parts of the planet. But as war fleets set sail and armies begin marching south, a stunning discovery is made that will change a lot more than just the weather....

B movies

Not really SF, this collection of mostly independent novels are all about the ACTION. The first 2 are in series, the other three are unrelated; I quit each one partway through, and didnt finish any of them. Aside from #2, which I skipped entirely.

Brain death

I can't stand this sort of novel, that I call 'Action for IDIOTS'. I get disgusted with Errors, plot errors, idiot actions that someone wouldn't take in their position, or ones that flatly aren't possible after previously described events (such as a station destroyed by nuclear weapons that were Laser weapons in previous paragraphs).

Crud

Should be titled 'Action Stories for IDIOTS. I quit trying to read this early on...
I can't stand books so focused on ACTION that they don't pay attention to what they're writing. Actions that don't make sense in the situation, and downright dumb plot errors that any editor should have gotten corrected.
If you're someone who can turn your brain off and just follow that kind of stuff then you might get farther than me...

Could not bother to finish. It was just too teenage for me. Not that teenage is necessarily bad, but it was in this case.

Final Days: The Complete Series
by Jasper T. Scott and Nathan Hystad

Book 1.) 5/5 stars. The 2029 and climate change is in the final gaps. Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and volcanic activity everywhere! Mass chaos. We follow a retired Marine and a hacker. The Marine, Andrew, his daughter goes missing alone with hundreds of other people. An FBI agent is investigating this cases. She and Andrew meet and Roland. What they find out about the missing persons is amazing.

Book 2.) 5/5 The people meet the billionaire Hound but where they are going seems to be a bit too secretive. A person goes missing. Lots of suspense and intrigue going on. Can't say more without given away spoilers.

Book 3.) 4/5 This is not what everyone expected. Where is Hound now? Lots of secrets are exposed now! Creatures are appearing, some good and some not so good! A radical religious group takes over and drugs and kills people. Help comes from unexpected sources. Good series!

This is a great sci-fi with plenty of action, adventure, creatures, suspense, and intrigue for the sci-fi fan! Enjoyed it immensely.

Love the scenario and the dogfights. conclusion and twist felt a little rushed but still fun.

OH MY GOODNESS, WHAT A FANTASTIC NOVEL! I could hardly stop reading! From the moment I felt sorry for Bill and his problems with his four star resort, I was intrigued with this novel and it is so worth every penny to buy it. How does he fight aliens surrounding his resort and duck meteors raining down on them?

WOW! What took me so long to read this book? I was HOOKED from the first chapter and now I HAVE to read the next book! Mr. Scott takes readers on a roller coaster ride filled with twists, turns, ups, and downs as I fought with Lucien and battled blue skin enemies, and searched for a traitor among them!

Questionable tactics (dog fighting? in space? mere kilometers from each other and you can't hit them because they're too far away?), and the need for an editor kind of spoiled a decent story for me. Possibly cautiously recommended...

Dark Space Universe is the first book in a trilogy, yet at the same time the seventh book in the Dark Space Universe series, but still able to be read as a standalone, which is what I did.

The story follows Lucien Ortane, son of Ethan Ortane, who is featured in the earlier series. Lucien is a devout follower of Etherus, God of the known universe. Etherus has established a "cosmic horizon", beyond which no one should travel. Lucien signs a petition initiated by a group of scientists who wish to travel beyond the cosmic horizon, doubting Etherus' status as a deity. Lucien, believing nothing will come if it, jokingly signs the petition, only to find out that Etherus grants the request and he finds himself a part of the mission with a group of non-believers.

I most enjoyed the discussions between characters that focused on God and the nature of religion and spirituality. The conversations were few and brief. It was just enough that made me want more of it. The chapters are fairly short and fit well with the crisp, fast pace of the story. The actions scenes, had this been a movie, would have probably felt more like a choreographed dance routine, but entertaining nonetheless. The author injected a good amount of intriguing science fiction and mixed a splash of humor to make this an all around enjoyable reading experience

My original Dark Space audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

I wanted to sink my teeth into some strong, hard science fiction and Dark Space by Jasper T. Scott landed in my lap. My teeth looked it at and said, “I’ll sink into that.”

So I hit play on Dark Space, and sat back to enjoy William Dufris’ reading of it.

For the most part, Dark Space is a very enjoyable (if thin and light) science fiction novella. Calling it a novel seems unfair as the audio clocks in at under six hours and the book itself is just 200 pages long. Comfortably I’d say it’s a novella.

Perhaps Dark Space’s greatest strength is clever concept of how humanity is hidden away in a galaxy surrounded by black holes. This ‘dark space’ has given our race a second chance after being nearly wiped out in a war against the alien Sythian race. People who have survived in the dark space region(previously a penal colony) are harder, darker and generally tougher because of the difficult times.

The main character Ethan Ortane is typical space opera fare. He’s a down on his luck pilot with a debt to pay and when his debtor catches up to him, he’s given an offer that will set his debt straight; sabotage the ship that guards the entrance to dark space. I don’t think I need to spell out that messing with the line of defense of the last place humans are safe is a pretty bad idea, and that it won’t be worth it to Ethan to do it.

Buuuut that’s no fun, and if Ethan didn’t jump into the convoluted plot there’d be no book to listen to. Luckily Dark Space starts out with an exciting space dogfight so you can get into it quickly and enjoy the tempo and forget about the fairly clichéd plot devices. One complaint I had was the lack of actual physics knowledge brought to bear by the author. Ships don’t need rudders or stabilizers in a zero gravity environment to steer. Had the book been advertised as something other than ‘hard science fiction’ those little errors would be no big deal, but when you say you’re hard on science, go hard on the science.

The book attempts a few twists towards the end to avoid what looks like the obvious, but in the end it does what I expected it to. It entertained me, but didn’t blow me away.

WIlliam Dufris is a competent and pleasant narrator. He has great range of voice and reads at a very good clip. I didn’t need to speed up the reading at all and felt like the book moved quite well. I’ll check out other books he’s put his voice to. I did experience a slight tinny quality to the audio, but messing with the levels fixed it easily.

Overall Dark Space is a short and entertaining listen that’s soft on science but long on potential.

Audiobook was purchased for review by ABR.

Dark Space 2 continues where the first left off, in terms of narrative and pace. The action sequences are just as energised and exciting as I have come to expect from this series.
There is so much detail throughout the book, but most impressive is that which sneaks into the space battles. To be honest I feel I could fly a Nova quite competently after reading this book, the instructions are there in every detail.
Excellent fun. Can't wait to start Dark Space 3... Ruh-kah!

Amazon was giving this one away for free. Had I known it was the first of 6 parts, I probably wouldn't have tried it, but at least I don't feel any need to spend money on the rest. For the most part, it's a fairly standard 80s-style space opera and wasn't terrible, though it felt like better editing might have tightened up some parts. It started to lose me pretty early on through two things. In all of the space battles, ships are damaged by the shockwaves from missiles. But in the vacuum of space there are no shockwaves. A missile will only damage a ship if it penetrates the hull or throws up a bunch of debris that the ship hits at high velocity.

The other problem was the made-up cursing. Frek and kakard were the most common and they pulled me out of the story every time they were used.

After a while, though, I was able to look past those problems and started to enjoy it. I was ready to give it three stars, but still wasn't interested in reading any more. But then came the big denouement. Out of nowhere, we're suddenly presented with a Dread Pirate Roberts situation. I found that problematic enough, but then the deeper secret was revealed and I just threw my hands up in disgust. If this had been a physical book, I'd have thrown it across the room.

A mix of Sci-Fi and fantasy that barrels along with minimal characterization but is great fun regardless.
The author usurps some old myths and legends into his story and, at times, I wish we had been able to more fully explore some of the societies we came across.
At the end, I hovered over the rating because the middle section felt like a teenage boys wet dream, but because I did enjoy it I gave it 4 stars.
To give it less would have felt churlish.
