Most people associate Quakers with peace; fewer know the breadth of how we as Friends have practiced our faith from an economic perspective. Simplicity and integrity, of course; but this important volume – Quakers, Politics, and Economics – offers a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the historical, intellectual, environmental, political and spiritual wholeness of economic life. As we confront the cultural and social ships of our global society that hungers for peace and justice, the economic choices we make in public policy will have significant impact on the welfare of the planet and people throughout the world. This eclectic collection of essays offers the reader material for both thoughtful discussion and spiritual reflection. Diane Randall, Executive Secretary Friends Committee on National Legislation.

Another wonderful book by David Ross that's part history and part travel guide. You could throw this in your suitcase and follow Bonnie Prince Charlie from his landing in Scotland through his campaign to take the throne back for his family, the retreat from England, the fateful Battle of Culloden, his wanderings as he eludes the Hanoverian forces, and where he leaves Scotland to board a ship for France. The continental monarchs cooled on Charles and weren't willing to lend men and arms. once the 1745 failed. It was also the end of a whole way of life for the Highlanders that followed him. I've enjoyed all his books.

Who was the Black Douglas and why did the English fear him?

The Black Douglas, or to the Scots James the Good became one of Robert the Bruce’s most trusted men. His childhood home became known as Castle Dangerous and English mother’s had to reassure their children at bedtime that they were safe…

Hush ye, hush ye, little pet ye,
Hush ye, hush ye, do not fret ye,
The Black Douglas shall not get ye.

Douglas played an integral part in the War for Scottish Independence yet few people today know about his exploits and achievements. During a treacherous time, he was a loyal guardian of Scotland and fought for the people.

While there are plenty of accounts on the life of Bruce and Wallace, Douglas is another story which is why I was glad when I discovered this book. The book details the life of James Douglas, jam packed with historical details as well as personal opinions of the author. It is an easy read that draws you into history, entertaining you while learning something along the way. Hardcore historians may be a bit disappointed but it is a great place to start if you are interested in Scottish history.

Part history part guide book you could pack this with you on a trip to Scotland and you'd find plenty to do anywhere you stopped. Nest time I'm across this book will be in my suitcase as he goes into great detail about some of the lesser know historical sights to be seen and that aren't necessarily marked. David R. Ross was a Scottish nationalist so that thread does run through his books as he strongly feels that Scotland should be governed from Edinburgh and not Westminster. When he died suddenly Scotland lost a great writer and champion.

The length of time I took reading this book doesn't indicate the quality of the book. It's a very good read. My required reading got in the way of pleasure reading. I've always enjoyed this author's books and will probably take some on vacation with me as they can also be used as travel guides or reveal a place that sounds so intriguing that you include it on your itinerary. He will be missed.

I totally enjoyed this book. He starts with the mythical pharaoh's daughter, Scotia and works his way through some of the more well-known queens up to the present day which involves at least one women who was involved with the nicking of the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey. You always learn something from his books.

Scotland's history chronologically this time with new material and some mentioned in "Desire Lines", but once more I totally enjoyed this book which can double as a travel guide. He mentions Nigel Tranter as the author who inspired him to go searching for Scottish history. I picked up my first Nigel Tranter historical novels in 1982 on my first trip to Scotland and must say I agree with this David R. Ross. Tranter was a wonderful writer as was David R. Ross

I enjoyed it and the author's passionate exploration of Scotland's past and what the battle and event sites currently look like. It's part history and part travel guide so that if you want to follow in the footsteps of James Douglas and David R. Ross you can. Unfortunately David R. Ross died within the last few years so we'll have no more books from him. Our loss.

I always enjoy this author's books as his enthusiasm for history and Scotland are found from beginning to end. If you find yourself going to Scotland you can take them along and use them as a tour guide as well. I've purchased the rest of his books and intend on spending the winter reading them.

Totally enjoyed this book! The author starts with a background on William Wallace, his career, betrayal, arrest, and execution. He takes you through on Wallace's route through London from where sentence was passed at a shame trial to his place of execution. It also covers the author's , 450 mile walk from Robroyston where Wallace was arrested to London on the 700th anniversary of event and the memorial service held for Wallace at St. Bartholomew the Great which stands near the execution spot. Ross' passion for his country, its history, and culture is ever evident as is his wit. Biography, history, and travel guide all wrapped up in one.
