Most people associate Quakers with peace; fewer know the breadth of how we as Friends have practiced our faith from an economic perspective. Simplicity and integrity, of course; but this important volume – Quakers, Politics, and Economics – offers a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the historical, intellectual, environmental, political and spiritual wholeness of economic life. As we confront the cultural and social ships of our global society that hungers for peace and justice, the economic choices we make in public policy will have significant impact on the welfare of the planet and people throughout the world. This eclectic collection of essays offers the reader material for both thoughtful discussion and spiritual reflection. Another wonderful book by David Ross that's part history and part travel guide. You could throw this in your suitcase and follow Bonnie Prince Charlie from his landing in Scotland through his campaign to take the throne back for his family, the retreat from England, the fateful Battle of Culloden, his wanderings as he eludes the Hanoverian forces, and where he leaves Scotland to board a ship for France. The continental monarchs cooled on Charles and weren't willing to lend men and arms. once the 1745 failed. It was also the end of a whole way of life for the Highlanders that followed him. I've enjoyed all his books.… (altro)

Who was the Black Douglas and why did the English fear him?

The Black Douglas, or to the Scots James the Good became one of Robert the Bruce’s most trusted men. His childhood home became known as Castle Dangerous and English mother’s had to reassure their children at bedtime that they were safe…

Hush ye, hush ye, little pet ye,
Hush ye, hush ye, do not fret ye,
The Black Douglas shall not get ye.

Douglas played an integral part in the War for Scottish Independence yet few people today know about his exploits and achievements. During a treacherous time, he was a loyal guardian of Scotland and fought for the people.

While there are plenty of accounts on the life of Bruce and Wallace, Douglas is another story which is why I was glad when I discovered this book. The book details the life of James Douglas, jam packed with historical details as well as personal opinions of the author. It is an easy read that draws you into history, entertaining you while learning something along the way. Hardcore historians may be a bit disappointed but it is a great place to start if you are interested in Scottish history.

Part history part guide book you could pack this with you on a trip to Scotland and you'd find plenty to do anywhere you stopped. Nest time I'm across this book will be in my suitcase as he goes into great detail about some of the lesser know historical sights to be seen and that aren't necessarily marked. David R. Ross was a Scottish nationalist so that thread does run through his books as he strongly feels that Scotland should be governed from Edinburgh and not Westminster. When he died suddenly Scotland lost a great writer and champion.… (altro)
