- Julia Sophia Pardoe was the daughter of a British army officer. She was interested in both writing and travel from an early age. Her prolific output in the early and middle Victorian era included three historical biographies, five travel books, about a dozen novels, three short story collections, two books of poetry, and numerous periodical articles.
