Letters used to be a common mode of one-sided parent-child communication, painstakingly and dutifully composed on the parental side, unresponsively taken in by the grownup offspring, as is their unreciprocal birthright. The wayward Charlie Mortimer somehow managed to hold on to these letters from his father, who happily throws in some performative humour and other mild amusements within his world-weary griping. There’s no particular purpose to this collection, so one can pick it up and read at any point, but the pithy style and frivolous spirit mean it’s never a drag.… (altro)

I was going to post a gushing review about this memoir, because the early chapters about Charlie's parents had me in stitches, but then he went off the boil talking about his art collection and I skimmed through the last chapters. But he's definitely a character, and very lucky indeed to have survived three decades with HIV/AIDS. Also, 'big cake, no people' is my new life philosophy!
The supposed sequel to the very funny 'Dear Lupin' which was essentially a collection of his father's letters to Charlie (nicknamed 'Lupin') and thus effectively written by his father. To label this as 'From ..the author of..' is stretching Publishers' blurb to the limit.
Undeniably quite funny in places - but there were all too few of them, it was a disappointing read although a well-meant gift. On its way to the next charity shop I think.

My parents just gave me this for Christmas. I was a bit taken aback when I saw the title. Message, Jim?
Anyway, it's hilarious, and I'm not given to overstatement. I really mean it. A brilliant comic eye and superb understatement. All terribly English.
