The concluding volume to the adaptation of the un filmed sequel to the legendary Dark Crystal movie. The Power of the Dark Crystal is a decent follow up to the original movie with great artwork and a good story. A worthy read for fans of the Dark Crystal.

Serving as the sequel to the original 80's movie, this graphic novel serves as a bold leap for the lore and story of the Dark Crystal itself. Just when you think you know it all, you have to relearn everything you thought you knew all over again. The Dark Crystal is already a massive world that never seems to be completely finished or final, so this is yet another chapter in its world building. We get to take a look back on some of the original cast and how they are holding up after 100 years or so as well as meet some new characters that fit in Thra seemingly well. There's also a string of events that occur that are somewhat striking considering how well you know your Dark Crystal lore (for me, it's fairly up there). I'd love to read more of this series- it's a dauntless continuation.

Ahhhhh. What a wonderful end to this series. It was almost a shame to close the pages. Our heroes found the secret of the Dark Crystal and helped bring unity to both their people. I loved everything about this series and think it’s a shame the movie never came together. There is a spin-off series called Beneath the Dark Crystal. I guess I will now have to go pick that up.

Volume 2 does not suffer from the second book slump. But is that even a thing with graphic novels? This smoothly continues from book one. This time our team of heroes are on a quest to the firelands to put back that shard. Loving this series.

Welcome back to the world of the Dark Crystal. Originally this was to be a movie sequel, but after that fell through, i am SOOOOOOOOOO happy that it was made into a graphic novel so I can delve back in and gush and gush and gush.

This story picks up 100 years after the events of the movie. Jen and Kira are still around as the leaders, or almost deities of the Thra, but things are not smooth. The Crystal is losing its light. A fireling has come to this land to seek help and a shard of the crystal to help heal his own land.

I am loving every bit of this graphic novel. The art and colorwork is amazing. The story, while similar to TDC is different, and we meet new characters. However, 100 years is a long time, and the gelfling are not as nice as they once were. I can not wait to continue this series.

I've been reading both the Lumberjanes and Gotham Academy series though I don't particularly enjoy either. And having the groups team up in this crossover really drives home the reason. None of the characters are very memorable. Halfway through the book, there were several characters whose book of origin I could not recall. Are they Lumberjanes? Academy students? Does it matter?

The story about the never-ending sweet-sixteen birthday party was actually kind of nice, and I was hoping the birthday girl would end up with one of the two groups, because she actually seems to be a person worth remembering.

This is a fun mash-up of two great comics but it didnt quite live up to its potential. It just doesn't seem like it challenged them so much, either group could have handled it on their own, so why a mash-up for a challenge not worthy of their combined efforts?

Because it's fun?

We'll have to go with that. I really loved the scenes leading to their run in and their initial interactions. Jen's freak out was great as always and the Gotham Academy mode of escape was pretty fantastic. What brought them together is a bit of an interesting concept, but also a bit of a let down. Personally, I could have liked a real monstr, but I think I get why they went with this. Only this combination could have brought things together.... but still, bring on the monsters!

The art follows the Lumberjanes style more than Gotham Academy, but there are some cover variants that had the Gotham Academy style. As always, the Lumberjanes use the names of famous or historical (herstorical? Is that a thing?) women as exclamations. This volume had three:

Chien Shingle Wu - who worked on the Manhattan project
Grainne Mhaol - an Irish lady in active leadership over her land in the 16th century
Jackie Mitchell - the famous female pithe who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gerigh
This has always been one of my favorite features of Lumberjanes. Since I already read both of these separately and a few other all-ages comics, I used thus one as my choice for Task 6 for Read Harder 2017. I do hope they do another combined run when this 'semester' is over at Gotham Academy.

This was such a fun story and just solidified my love for both of these series even more. I hope to see another crossover in the future!

Picking up 100 years after the events of The Dark Crystal, the land of Thra is lush and vibrant, a world basking in the glow of the healed Crystal. Or, at least that's what the Crystalline Eminence wants everyone, including Jen and Kira, to believe. Jen and Kira slumber in the glow of the Crystal, trusting that the world of Thra is still at peace. In their absence, the Crystalline Eminence has convinced the inhabitants of Thra that in order for them to bask in the glow and be healed by the Crystal, they must bring tributes to the Crystal, and without a tribute, they are turned away. This is not the world that Jen and Kira dream of in their slumber. Thra is sick, and they are unaware.

When Thurma, a young Fireling (beings who live in the flames of the core of Thra), is sent to beseech help from the Gelflings who rule Thra, she sets in motion events that she does not truly understand, because she is sent to request a shard of Crystal, which her elders say will rekindle the dying flames of their world. When she is turned away, Thurma takes matter into her own hands and cracks the Crystal again, freeing once again both the Mystics and Skeksis. As she flees the Castle of the Crystle, Thurma is entirely unaware of the evil that she has let lose into the world again.

I loved this story. Based on a script that was written as the sequel to the film, this reads just like the original movie feels. All of the characters from the film make an appearance, including Aughra and Fizzgig, and everyone feels like themselves. Simon Spurrier has expertly captured the characters voices and personalities. Kelly and Nichole Matthews' art is spot on perfect for this project, with a lovely natural flow to the art that breathes life into the land people of Thra.

I wish this had been made into a film; I'm wildly curious as to how they would have created Thurma in puppet form. However, being given the opportunity to read what could have been in film is still just as thrilling. If you're a fan of The Dark Crystal, this is essential reading.

This was so cute! I haven't read any Lumberjanes or Gotham Academy before this book but I was still able to follow the story very easily. I would very much recommend this. I absolutely loved the story!
