What would it be like to work with the homeless?

I have wondered how it is possible people can help the homeless, and this book explains how it could be done. I like knowing that, although difficult, it is possible. A clear plan to follow is provided. When to back up or move forward is explained. Many of the people have experienced such trauma special strategies must be employed. Staff also needs opportunities to be supported as the work can be draining. I found this book to be interesting though I am not a social worker.… (altro)

Review Excerpt
Levy crafts stories of characters who sear the memory: Old Man Ray, the World War 2 veteran who resents the VA system and regards himself as the de facto night watchman at Port Authority; Ben who claims to be a prophet disowned in his own country, crucified by the government and enslaved by poverty finds a bridge to the mainstream services and a path to housing through the common language of religious metaphors, including redemption and forgiveness; and Andrew who has been “mentally murdered” is helped to understand his own situation and gain disability benefits through the language of trauma; among others.

These stories are deftly interwoven with theory and practice as Levy constructs his developmental model of the engagement and pretreatment process. The outreach worker strives to understand the language and the culture of each homeless individual, builds a bridge to the mainstream services, and helps those providers to understand the special circumstances of these vulnerable people. Levy bears witness to the courage of these pilgrims who wander the streets of our cities, and his poignant book is a testament to the healing power of trusting and enduring relationships.

Jim O'Connell, MD - President and Street Physician for Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. He is nationally recognized as one of the preeminent experts on homelessness and health care.

The reason why I wanted to read this book was to find out resources and links to homeless people and the outreach centers. Even though this was written a while ago it is very informative and can give you ways to help the homeless but also to help yourself in the event you may become homeless. In this day and age of the 21st century I read of so many foreclosure homes in many States. I hope that more people read this resource if they need it. The hardest part of homeless is the mental illness and addictions that many have and how they could get help to get better. In the event that you come across a homeless person it is wise to drop off food and not money. Keep those items inside your trunk that are nonperishables. I just say a man with a sign saying, Help Me I am Homeless in a small town I went through on 6/172016. This is something I am not use to seeing so the reality is, if I see it, then others see it. I pray that others want to read this book and want to help. © 2016 Jackie Paulson… (altro)
