Jenny Hilborne's latest Doucette mystery is a complex and gritty crime story.

Tangled relationships leave you questioning - or maybe second guessing - each person's role. Everyone has something to hide, or at least a secret they'd prefer not to share. John Doucette is relentless as he pulls away all the layers to get at the truth.

The plot builds from a slow burn to a heart-thumping end. Just when you think you have it figured out, a twist comes along to knock you off balance. Hilborne never lets us get too comfortable in our assumptions.

While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Each book reads well on its own, with Doucette investigating and the murder as the central issue.

*I was fortunate to read an advance copy.*

A Halloween party, a game of hide and seek ending with a missing person. Inspector Mac Jackson begins to investigate and soon there are more bodies. A police procedural from beginning to end that I could not put down. A mystery where you get to follow the clues as they occur.

Easy Target is a mystery/suspense novel that kept me absolutely engrossed. The plot is multi-layered, without being overly complicated or confusing.

As this story unfolded, I was right there in the midst of things, trying to solve the mystery. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist knocked me off balance.

Hilborne does a superb job of putting us in the mind of a victim. We feel what it's like to survive a brutal crime, how difficult it is to move on, and how much it changes the course of your life. And we start to wonder if that all makes a person more vulnerable to future crime.

While this is the second book in a series, it's easily read as a stand-alone.

The Blackest Night is my favorite book by Jenny Hilborne so far. This is psychological suspense at its best, along with mystery and a sprinkling of paranormal.

One of the things I love about this series is that, while the series belongs to Mac Jackson, he doesn't steal the limelight. His role as detective is often secondary to the new main character's story. This keeps each book fresh and exciting.

William Law is a captivating character. I felt his fear and his defiance, his frustration and his hope. While the action propels this story forward, the characters keep us wanting more.

Because Mac Jackson's personal life is not the focus of this series, each can be read as a stand-alone. This is definitely a title I recommend to anyone who wants to get lost in a great suspense story.

Stone Cold is a complex, plot-driven story of power, corruption, and deceit. Hilborne does a great job of fitting the pieces together a little at a time, allowing the story to unfold while keeping readers guessing.

There are a lot of characters, none standing out specifically as a main character. Also, I didn't particularly like most of the characters. This was due to the nature of the story, and not a fault of the author. The combination made it difficult for me to connect, since my preferences lean more toward character-driven fiction.

Overall, this is a perfect book for readers looking for a well written story with an intricate plot.

For a short piece, this story has incredible power. I found it compelling and was sucked in from the opening paragraph. The character development and plot are exceptionally well done, right up to the twist at the end. I would love to see more from the main character.

I was already a fan of Jenny Hilborne's novels. For those of you yet to read her work, this is a perfect introduction.

This is the second book in the series revolving around Detective Mac Jackson, but can easily be read as a stand-alone. One of the things I love about this series is that Jackson is more of a minor character. We don’t get caught up in his ego or personal life, so each story is fresh, with new characters to get to know. Hilborne could write 60 books like this, and a reader could pick up any one of them and immediately connect.

Hide and Seeks’ plot is complex, but never confusing. As the story unfolds, little clues are left like breadcrumbs leading us down a path. The characters are well-developed and feel like real people. I was immediately sucked into their world and enjoyed every second of the journey.

A fun and fast who-done-it. I did figure out the "who" relatively early in the book, but there were enough twists to keep me guessing about certain things until the end. The book ends pretty clearly indicating a sequel which I don't care for. I would love for the story to be complete and the loose ends to be tied up. This book also wove in a story that occurred before this one started. I could see a "pre-quel" coming at some point also. I hope there is because that sounded like a pretty interesting tale as well.

While this is generally not the type of book I read, I have read a few similar lately and thought I would give it a try. I couldn't get past page 40. I was ready to stop at 20 but decided to give it a little more time. By page 40 I just couldn't stomach any more time spent with spineless, negative, hopeless characters. Who would want to spend time with real people much less characters in a book.

Ms. Hilborne has crafted a great mystery with interesting characters. Isabelle Kingsley is a woman on the edge because she's found that her husband is cheating on her. She's been married to Clark for six years and thought their marriage was happy and doing well. She knows that something is going on and presumes it is an extramarital affair. She also knows that her best friend, Darius Martin, is avoiding her. He must know something about Clark's behavior, but Darius has his own problems to worry about, namely blackmail. Who's blackmailing him? Georgia Legg has Darius over a barrel, financially speaking, and he hopes that Isabelle will never find out about it. To make matters worse, Georgia is the other woman in Clark's life. Isabelle receives anonymous confirmation that Clark is definitely having an affair in the form of a sonogram of Georgia and Clark's baby. Just when things look like they couldn't get any worse, Georgia is murdered with Isabelle's gun and Isabelle has no alibi for the time of the murder. What follows is a topsy-turvy investigation into the murder. Is Isabelle a suspect? Did Darius commit the crime to get out of the blackmail? Perhaps Clark wanted to permanently end the relationship with Georgia? These are questions that Inspectors Doucette and Beaumont ponder as they investigate Georgia's murder. It doesn't help that there may be a mad woman on the loose, another woman from Clark's life, his ex Fitch. But how does Fitch tie into the murder and why hasn't she targeted Isabelle as promised a few years back? I could answer that question but then you wouldn't need to read No Alibi for yourself, and you want to read this book. No Alibi is a quick and enjoyable read that is perfect for a lazy afternoon or weekend. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Hilborne in the future.½

I loved No Alibi written by Jenny Hilborne. It’s a thriller that every woman who has a cheating partner will wonder if in some way it happened to them what they would do. There are lots of twists and turns, a bit like a spider web, and the ending will surprise you….in a good way!

I typically don't read modern day mystery novels, so I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed this one. It was quite compelling and I found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it. I was hoping, however, that I didn't know "who dunnit", but it turned out that I did. A little more surprise would have been nice. I think that may have been accomplished by not letting us "hear" the detectives thoughts as much as he seemed to already know who was innocent. This was a page turner for me and as with all books I enjoy that end this way, when I finished the last page, I said aloud "are you kidding me?"! I'm hoping there is a sequel because I feel like there is a lot of unfinished business to attend to! I would definitely recommend this book!

This was a good book, although it seemed to work too hard at being a mystery, and left too many loose ends for my taste. I know there's going to be a sequel, but unless all of the characters from this one carry over into the next. . . . Additionally, I guessed one of the main plot points within the first few chapters, as well as knowing everybody who didn't do it before the halfway point. Nevertheless, I will look for more work from this author, as I love watching new talent develop over time, and I think this author has definite potential.

Madness and Murder is the perfect title for this book. From the first page, both the madness and the murder held me riveted. The action is fast-paced, taking me on a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Hilborne disperses little details throughout that allowed me to "see" the setting. The characters are well developed; some I loved and some I couldn't help but despise. This is an excellent first book and I'm looking forward to many more!
