Jenny Hilborne's latest Doucette mystery is a complex and gritty crime story.

Tangled relationships leave you questioning - or maybe second guessing - each person's role. Everyone has something to hide, or at least a secret they'd prefer not to share. John Doucette is relentless as he pulls away all the layers to get at the truth.

The plot builds from a slow burn to a heart-thumping end. Just when you think you have it figured out, a twist comes along to knock you off balance. Hilborne never lets us get too comfortable in our assumptions.

While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Each book reads well on its own, with Doucette investigating and the murder as the central issue.

*I was fortunate to read an advance copy.*

A Halloween party, a game of hide and seek ending with a missing person. Inspector Mac Jackson begins to investigate and soon there are more bodies. A police procedural from beginning to end that I could not put down. A mystery where you get to follow the clues as they occur.

Easy Target is a mystery/suspense novel that kept me absolutely engrossed. The plot is multi-layered, without being overly complicated or confusing.

As this story unfolded, I was right there in the midst of things, trying to solve the mystery. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist knocked me off balance.

Hilborne does a superb job of putting us in the mind of a victim. We feel what it's like to survive a brutal crime, how difficult it is to move on, and how much it changes the course of your life. And we start to wonder if that all makes a person more vulnerable to future crime.

While this is the second book in a series, it's easily read as a stand-alone.
