The overall theme of the book is to love what you love and not let the opinions of others change your mind. Both girls let the other girl's opinion of their boots make them feel bad until they sit and talk and make clear their full, true opinion of the situation and they are able to resume their friendship and be happy. It would be good to help teach kids about peer pressure. The illustrations in the book are lovely. The emotional expressions are portrayed with delicate subtlety that is delightful. They could definitely be used in a reading time with additional questions to draw out more critical thinking about the topic of peer pressure.

Jamaica is a little girl the main character in this book. The story follows her as she finds things on the playground one day. She turns everything in to the lost and found except for a stuffed dog. The reader follows along as she learns that just because she wants something that she cannot just take it and have it. Jamaica takes the toy back the next day, and makes a new friend who is looking for a toy she lost at the playground the day before. Jamaica takes the girl to the lost and found and gets her the dog back. This could be useful in the classroom to help remind the students that it is important to always be kind and courteous to others.

Sato is one of Japan's master ivory carvers. As Sato prepares to carve the most magnificent piece of ivory of his career, the harsh reality of where the tusk came from causes him to give up the work he loves. "The handsome paintings establish a convincing sense of place while vividly portraying the artist's anguish."

This is a delightful and quick tale of a lower income neighborhood and an out of work teacher with plans to spruce up the neighborhood with a lot garden. Many obstacles come into play as these three unlikely friends bring together a neighborhood with the love of nature.

Jamaica doesn't have any boots so she has to wear her brothers old boots and she hates them. Jamaica saw Brianna at the bus stop and thought how pretty her pink boots were. Brianna yelled that she was wearing boy boots which made her feel worse. There was a hole in the boot that Jamaica made worse at school because she wanted new ones. So they went to the shoe store and Jamaica picked out a pair of real cowboy boots that she loved. She was excited to show off her boots the next day but Brianna wasn't happy for her so Jamacia told her that she saw pink boots like Brianna's at the store but didn't get them because they were ugly. They ended up talking it out when they got to school and found out that they were both wearing hammy down boots.
This story did a great job at showing that you never know what someone else is going through. The girls apologized to each other and worked everything out by talking and telling each other the truth. I loved the illustrations in this book.

Sato and the Elephants was centralized around the main character Sato. From a young child Sato wanted to carve ivory with the type of skill that his father had. well that was until the day came that he bought, what he thought was the best piece of ivory, that he was going to make a masterpiece of this piece. He worked nearly all day to make this piece perfect, but he noticed something a blemish and then realized that it was bullet. He immediately felt sorrow, because that is when it hit him, that they were killing these elephants for their tusks and he had what i would like to call an epiphany. From there he stopped using ivory and carved out of stone. The central message i believe is that we should not be killing animals for materials such as ivory to carve, because it would not be long till there are none left.

Leroy and the clock was not the most interesting book, and does not feel like it would appeal to many kids. Although it does show a heartwarming moment when Leroy decides to keep the clock working, because he realizes how important and how much his grandfather likes it. Not only that even how much he uses it to decide when to do things. The entire store was about Leroy wanting that clock to be quiet because it was to loud and annoyed him.

"Jamaica's Find" is a cute story about Jamaica, who finds a stuffed dog and hat at a park, she returns the hat into the lost and found but not the dog. When she gets home her mother tells her that she should have returned the dog too. She decides to return the dog and then finds the owner of the stuffed animal.

This book taught me many things. First, I knew that there were talented people who could make beautiful carvings, but I never knew where some of them came from. I have new found knowledge about the work it takes to carve and where ivory comes from. Secondly, I have a new respect for elephants and all animals. They are such beautiful creatures and the fact that a bullet was, found almost had me in tears. I grew up and still live in a parish that thrives on hunting and fishing, but I never knew that elephants were being harmed. This is a big issue and I am forever grateful to this book for giving me a new perspective and teaching me things I did not know. I would use this book in a classroom, in hopes that students would learn something new, as I did. I thought of quote "Reading=hope x change" by Jacqueline Woodson, another author I am very fond of.

This book tells a fun, loving story of a grandfather and his grandson. This is the first time Leroy has stayed alone with his grandfather and things were very different. He had an old clock that went off every hour, reminding Grandfather what he had to do. Leroy could not sleep and did not understand why the clock made so much noise. When it stops, he realizes what it means to his grandfather and decides it should still go off. There are many things I like about this book but two of them are: the showing of how times have changed with a wind up, loud clock and small, quiet ones with numbers, and the relationship between the two. Ad I was reading I could tell they loved each other very much and shared a strong bond. Their relationship is similar to the one that I have with my grandparents. This book was a nice, heartwarming book. Juanita Havill is amazing!

This book told a loving, inspiring, and relatable story about siblings. Kevin did not want to take his little brother Joseph to his magic fort, but he was over ruled by his mother. His brother is hurt and he begins feeling guilty for not watching him and is very upset. Kevin learns through those feelings that his brother will always be there and they should have fun together, only when it is safe for them to play. This book can teach readers about sibling dynamics and how to care for others. Awesome read!

This book by Juanita Havill tells a wonderful tale of family treasures, and culture. For example, the pito is a treasure passed down throughout the generations. I could relate this because I have jewelry, pictures, cards, and dolls, given to me by family members who are no longer here> I treasure them and often take them out just to feel and see them. I can understand why Alicia was so excited to open up the trunk and play the pito, carefully. In terms of culture, the way of travel, way the homes were decorated and the city they lived in all accurately and greatly represent Mexico. I loved the illustrations, as well as the words. I would read this over and over again!

This book tells a wonderful tale about magical trolls. When people begin moving near them, father troll decides it is time to move, as people and trolls cannot live together. Young troll is confused as to why and decides to stay. He travels and lives with people fine, until his secret is out; Becky knows he is a troll. She tells the whole town, though no one believes her. He soon realizes what father troll meant by trolls and people cannot live together, though his curiosity remained the same. This book is interesting to me because I think many people still have this mindset and it is a very pressing issue. For example, when someone new moves to a neighborhood that is from a different culture or race, they may feel it is tough to live together. I think with the ever changing world we live in, things will get better, though I am not sure when. This was a very fun and interesting read. Another wonderful piece of work by Juantia Havill.

Of all the "Jamaica" books, I think this one is my favorite. This book tells a story about moving homes, sharing, and being nice to one another. In schools many children can find themselves moving, having to share toys or supplies, and being told by all the adults, to be nice to their classmates and friends. This book can etach readers lessons that are some of the most important things they will learn in their life. This book teaches these things in a fun, engaging way. This book was a page turner for me, as I read it over and over again, finding new things to love each time. Juanita is one of my favorite authors thus far.

This book brought back wonderful memories from when I was young. We were never allowed to have pets, except fish, because the hair would cover the sofa, carpet, and my mom figured she would end up caring for the animal when we grew tired of it- she was right. After Hurricane Katrina, we had lost everything and had just moved back into our house. We begged and pleaded for a cat- and we got one! My sisters and I scooped the litter and bathed her, but soon my mom did all of that. Now that I am older and responsible enough to care for something besides fish, my boyfriend and sister are allergic. They immediately start itching and sneezing, like Ossie. I totally understand how Jamaica felt when she had to return Puffy and how she cared for her family more. A common theme I am finding through out the "Jamaica" books, is family.
I also noticed, which I really liked, was Kristin was a character in this book, as well as in "Jamaica's Find". I love that I can read multiple books and recognize the same characters.

As an older sibling, I am all to familiar with the feeling of wanting to be away from your siblings. Growing up, I hated having to bring my little sisters with me when I went to a friend's house. I wanted to get away, not bring them with me. I greatly related to Ossie, as he is the older sibling with a tag-along. I love the kindness that Jamaica showed to Berto, as she could understand how he must have felt when his mother said, "big kids don't want to be bothered by little kids". I could see Jamaica growing and changing. Loved this!

Like many other books by Juanita Havill, this book takes readers through a story about Jamaica. I really enjoy reading different books about one character, as I am able to see the development and growth she goes through. This particular book tells the story of Jamaica getting new boots, as she did not like wearing her brother's old ones. When her friend Brianna has pretty pink boots, Jamaica decides she cannot buy pink boots, as she feels that Brianna will think she is copying her. When the two talk about it, they find that it was in fact, the exact opposite. The two friends play and enjoy time together in their own cowboy and pink boots. In this book, Jamaica and Brianna were using hand me down boots, which I am no stranger to. I think they felt as if they couldn't have anything that was their own. This is a situation that many children are in everyday and many children can see themselves in this story. I would happily add this book to my classroom set!

This book was a lot of fun to read. This book tells the story off Jamaica, a young girl who finds a red, sock hat and a stuffed dog in the park. She brings the hat to the lost and found, but keeps the dog, in hopes of it remaining hers. When she is told to return it by her mother, as the child who lost it, may be looking for it. When she was playing at the park the next day, she found the owner of the stuffed dog. In my opinion, the text is what made this book so great, thought the illustrations are beautiful as well. This book teaches readers about ownership, friendship, and responsibility, things that are essential in life. If children are able to see that Jamaica gave the stuffed dog back, as it did not belong to her, they will be able to imagine themselves in similar situations and how they should handle them. Whenever something is found and you are not sure who it belongs to, bring it to the lost and found. Great read!

This magical book is collection of twenty poems set in a very special garden. Each poem is more delightful and cleverer than the next. The book takes you from underground where the radishes illuminate to light way for the earth worms, to high above the clouds where the lightening bugs light the sky to avoid the rain. The illustrations are bright and fun and are the perfect accompaniment for this charming book.

This is a charming story of close friendship in an ethnically diverse school. The younger sister is dismayed when the lead role in the dance recital is given to her older sister instead. However, they both end up getting sick and can't participate. In the end they get together with their friends and happily put on a private performance for their supportive families. The illustrations are as warm and comforting as the story.

Young Jamaica is eager to impress the new substitute teacher in this sweet book right from many of our own childhoods. When Jamaica is even caught cheating, she demonstrates honesty in even the hardest times which is so refreshing for our young audience members. The illustrator did a great job drawing my eyes to the foal point of each page with his use of horizontal lines.
