This book by Juanita Havill tells a wonderful tale of family treasures, and culture. For example, the pito is a treasure passed down throughout the generations. I could relate this because I have jewelry, pictures, cards, and dolls, given to me by family members who are no longer here> I treasure them and often take them out just to feel and see them. I can understand why Alicia was so excited to open up the trunk and play the pito, carefully. In terms of culture, the way of travel, way the homes were decorated and the city they lived in all accurately and greatly represent Mexico. I loved the illustrations, as well as the words. I would read this over and over again! ( ) Young Alicia's mother shares with her the story of Alicia's great grandmother Rita's immigration from Mexico to America. It focuses more on Rita's last time seeing her grandfather before moving to the United states. He shows her around the village and shares aspects of his life and a gift to remember him by. I enjoyed how this book links the importance of family, heritage, and culture. It is exciting and helpful for a child to learn who they are by first getting to know their family and culture. This book shows the excitement and joy that can come from spending time with your grandparents and learning from their experiences and passions. Especially in Arizona, some young children will be able to relate to having family away in Mexico or some far place that they don't get to see often. It shows how when we miss people we can turn to memories or "family treasures" that may connect us to that person or culture for comfort or direction. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
