I just love these books that take me back to my childhood! I was an unabashed gearhead growing up in the sixties and seventies. Loved reading about anything racing related. Loved going to the Friday night stock car races in my hometown, and the Saturday night races in a nearby town. Devoured racing magazines, and watching drag races on the Wide World of Sports. Spent hours with my cousins building plastic models of our favorite racers.
And "The Drag-On Lady" was one of them! We were fascinated with the fact that a woman (oh my gosh!) would routinely beat the men.
This book covers the period extremely well. I learned so much from it. And the photographs....just wow! It's an incredible romp into my past.
Thank you to LibraryThing for providing me with a copy of this book. It's going into my permanent library for whenever I need a trip down memory land.

Meet drag racing legend and pioneer Shirley Shahan, the Drag-On Lady!

As the first woman to win an NHRA national event when she was named Top Stock Eliminator at the 1966 Winternationals, Shahan blazed a trail for women in drag racing. During the golden era of drag racing, it was rare to find diversity in the sport. Shahan is what’s commonly known as a living legend.

In a career that spanned the 1950s and into the early 1970s, Shahan drove 1956 and 1958 Chevys and was one of the lucky few who was able to purchase one of the rare 1963 Chevrolet RPO Z11 Super Stockers. Later, when she was driving for Plymouth and Dodge, Shahan made the name Drag-On Lady both famous and feared. She then moved to American Motors and raced very successfully with the new SS/AMX.

From 1958 to 1972, Shahan set records and won numerous awards. She was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, Super Stock Magazine Hall of Fame, and Mopar Hall of Fame, and she was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Bakersfield racetrack. In addition, Shirley won the Top Stock category at the very first March Meet at the legendary Famoso Raceway track near Bakersfield, California, which made her the first person (male or female) to do so. In 1966, she was the named one of Hot Rod magazine’s Top 10 Drivers.

She raced against the best drivers during the golden age of drag racing and more often than not blew off the doors of her opponents. She had a fierce passion for winning, and in this book, you’ll feel what it was like to be behind the wheel as she steers you through her illustrious career. Fasten your seat belt; it’s going to be a wild ride.

Whether you love racing and want to delve into the history of one of its drivers, Shirley Shahan, or whether you want to dip your toe into the topic, this book is a wonderful place to start. The high quality pictures and conversational writing style drew me in. A quick read that gives you enough of Shirley Shahan's personal life, so she is a relatable and sympathetic character. It also covers extensively her professional career and development, but it's not portrayed in a way that is too technical. As someone who has no knowledge of racing or interest in cars, I started reading this book more out of a desire to learn something new than the topic. Although I expected not to like it, this book is engaging, and I would recommend it.

A fascinating look into Shirley Shahan's life, personal and professional. And the photos are amazing! The layout is perfect for either perusing the photos and sidebars or for sitting down and reading cover to cover in an afternoon.

I have read several books on Sherley Shahan but this one is the best! All the pictures and the story going back to her young days and growing up in California. She always loved cars and learned a lot working with her day on roofing jobs and driving the old Studebaker pickup. She was well known in the racing crowd and earned a name for herself in drag racing at an early age. This book is about her life.....and a good life she had.

This is a fine effort by Patrick Foster to bring to the reader an extensive look at the career of one of drag racing's true heroes. The illustrations are extensive and add much to the well developed narrative. Her career involved cars from Plymouth and later AMC. Foster shares the highs and lows of Shahan's fabulous career. A great read.

Terrific book. While Shirley's life and achievements are fascinating, the book also gives great insight to the Plymouth, Dodge, and AMC cars she drove. Everything is neatly set into the context of the times. Great photos. Well-organized and well-written. Thoroughly enjoyable book. I could reread this over and over again.½

Received the book through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers. Excellent! NHRA legend Shirley Shahan's story unfolds through an abundance of photos, news clippings and text that is easy to follow...even for someone who is new to the world of Drag Racing. Shirley Shahan The Drag-on Lady by Patrick Foster is a great addition to any library.

Patrick Foster has produced a Great Bibliography of Shirley Shahan, The Drag-On-Lady. Filled with not only her accomplishments but also her story in her own words. Her life before during and after her glory days.
A True inspiration for females who have a interest in Drag Racing. How to be a mother, wife and Dragster. Overall a look back into the time where females had to prove them selves in all types of sports.
A look at the different types of cars used in the 1960's drag racing.
Filled with plenty of photos both from press releases and also those of Shahan herself.
Inflation has hit the price, but for a true fan of Drag Racing, well worth the price and then too, you might meet Shirley Shahan in person and get her to sign your copy.

Shirley Shahan: The Drag-on Lady by Patrick Foster is yet another great book from CarTech. From The 50s and into the early 70s, this NHRA Legend set records and won awards including the first woman to win a national NHRA event. Shahan blazed a trail for all the women to come after her. This book takes a detailed look at the woman and her career. Of course there are lots of wonderful photos throughout this book. I received Shirley Shahan: The Drag-on Lady as part of LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program, in exchange for this review.½

Author Foster explains how Shahan's upbringing helped build the skills necessary to become a Hall of Fame drag racer. She was a trend setting woman who broke through barriers in a field dominated by men. The book is well-designed, easy to read and follow Shahan's life from childhood through 2020. Great information on the cars she raced in and the mechanical ability of herself and her first husband, H.L. Shahan. The photographs and captions add greatly to the book.

Encyclopedia of facts about absolutely all models of Jeeps. Lots of history on all models produced through the years, thus helpful if deciding which older model to purchase for a rebuild. Cannot be consumed in one sitting, but perfect for toilet reading. Recommended for anyone collecting or working on Jeeps, and even the armchair off-roader.

This is an excellent book for Jeep enthusiasts. It covers the production history of Jeep's various models from the beginning until now. The book is easy to pick up and put down as time allows since it is just a collection of facts. Chapters cover specific model(s), and each chapter is broken down into sections that detail various mechanical aspects or other related trivia. This book contains a lot of technical details that can bog down someone with limited car knowledge (me!). However, it's well written and interesting; I definitely learned a lot about Jeeps! I would recommend this book, as well as, other Car Tech books for anyone with an interest in cars.

There truly are 1001 facts about Jeeps in this book, and they are accompanied by glossy photos on nearly every page. It is helpful that the facts are collected in nine chapters. Each chapter groups facts about different eras and models of Jeep production, such as the Military Jeeps or the Jeep Wrangler. There is no pop-culture trivia; instead the information in this book is specific to details about the production and features of the vehicles. What a great gift for a loyal Jeep lover. The last "fact" listed is: "There are just two kinds of people in the world: those who own Jeeps and those who wish they owned Jeeps."
