One of marks of how much I like a book, and find it useful is turned-down pages, and 1,0001 Things They Won't Tell You: An Insiders Guide to Spending... is heavily turned down! *A huge plus is that it's from the Editors of Smart Money!

This is a reference book, not necessarily one you'd read all in one sitting or in order. Although you'd probably learn a lot of new info if you did. It's arranged in categories for all the types of businesses the average person may have to interact with, like lawyers, doctors, mechanics, airlines, plumbers, contractors, orthodontists, spas, dry cleaners, grocery stores, etc. He tells you about 10 ways each that they might try to scam you or gives you helpful information on how to get the best service and price. Quite handy.

I stalled on writing this review because I really wanted to like this book. I was excited to find out all of these "inside" tips, until I got the book and realized I already knew everything in it. I guess it would be good for beginners... beginners at life.

This book is a compendium of consumer-advocacy articles from SmartMoney magazine. The articles cover 100 different topics from credit cards to cruise lines, fitness clubs to used car salesmen, giving 10 helpful hints for each. The unifying theme is "What they won't tell you", i.e., the inside information that is needed to be an informed consumer and avoid paying too much or getting scammed.

Basic, somewhat interesting - but unfortunately, not a lot of things that you didn't know, or that you were really curious about.

This book covers many different areas that can help you save money however, that is the problem. It covers so many areas that it just skims the surface of the material out there. Many of the things that are not told are common sense details. For instance; the trouble you can run into when you run a tab at a bar, open houses are networking meetings for the Realtor, rental car companies are tax magnets, music on your iPod will difficult to transfer to a new computer.
The items I did learn about I think I could have gotten from a little work on the internet before I purchased an item or service. Our local station also uses these article on their newscasts and tease them forever before giving the viewer a couple of the 10 then tell you to go to the website. So I think that some of these were in the Smart Money magazine.
I gave it three stars because the information it does give you is good but much of it common sense. Each chapter is "10 things __________ won't tell you." I found that I knew most of the 10 things and that the 3 or 4 things I may not have previous would not justify a higher rating.

I always find this section interesting in Smart Money, but the whole collection of these "What ___ Won't Tell you" articles highlights the differences between a magazine and a book. Reading even a few together shows redundant patterns ("It's hard to get your money back from ____") and much less of the inside secrets suggested by the title. I wanted more examples like the fact that Major League Baseball has a unique anti-trust exemption and that nearly a quarter of cruise lines' revenue comes from extras like drinks, tips, and side trips. It's still an entertaining book to browse or keep on the shelf in the guest room.

This is a fantastic book. It gives you behind-the-scenes information to understand how things work in all sorts of situations that you're guaranteed to encounter in your life. The format for each topic includes the 10 things you won't be told (most often leaving you at a disadvantage) followed by a few tips of how to get on equal footing.

It's not the type of book you read through at one sitting, but I've been doing just that because I find the information so useful. I've read several 10-item sections in one sitting.

This book will remain on my bookshelf as an essential reference for whenever I deal with situations they cover. Highly recommended.

Great reference book. In just 20 minutes of reading, I discovered multiple ideas to help me save money (and live wiser). This likely won't be a book you'll read cover-to-cover, but will want to keep on hand for when you're in need of "advice from professionals on health care, education, finance, automobiles, house and home, insurance, goods and services, travel, entertainment, pets, food and drink, and more."
