Dorothy Carter pens a story which we all can relate too. "Bye, Mis Lela" is a sweet book which follows a little girl who has a special babysitter. The babysitter treats her as if she were her own and she loved going to see Mis Lele. Then, Mis Lela dies and the child has many questions about death and what was happening to her babysitter. A very well written story about coping with death of a special person in a child's life.½

This is a heart-warming story of a young girl who always went to Mis'Lela's house when her Momma went to work. One day, Mis'Lela passed away and the young girl did not understand. This story helps children understand the death of someone they know, but it also is a story that a lot of children can relate to if they have to go to someone else's house if one or both of their parents are at work.½

A young girl's mother is always working so she leaves her daughter with a sweet older lady named Mis'Lela. Mis'Lela cares very much for the little girl, she is almost like a grandmother figure for her. She likes to greet kids while they are on their way to school and the children that live in the block are very respectful. One day, the young girl gets the sad new of Mis'Lela passing away. The young girl keeps Mis'Lela in her heart and when she goes to school and passes by her house she greets her as if she is still there. I though this book was really sweet and sad at the same time. It shows how sometimes you do chose who you view as family.

A child "Sugar Plum," gets babysat while her mother works by an older lady, Mis' Lela. They have very fun times together but one day the old lady dies. The child does not give the lady a final goodbye, more like a, I'll see you later. The little girl still waves at the old lady's house when she passes it and believes there is no such thing as a last goodbye.

This story is about a little girl who always stays with their elderly neighbor during the day when her mom is at work and siblings at school. Mis' Lela passes away though and the little girl is faced with having to attend the wake at her house and get used to not having her in her life.
Death is a hard thing for children to deal with and this book seemed to do a pretty job of that. I'm not completely sure how I felt about the whole thing though and actually having the dead character pictured in her bed.

This story almost makes me want to cry. It is very hard to explain to children what death is. They have a hard time understanding that someone is gone forever. It's always nice to see how memories keep them alive. This would be a nice book to pair with "Grandpaw Green." They both explain that even though a person is gone their memories still live on.

This book is about how a little girl copes with the death of an old woman that was like a grandmother to her. The book starts off with the mother dropping off her daughter with the woman, Mis' Lela, and it shows how their days are like from washing in a washtub after playing in the dirt to a woman coming over to teach them about the Bible. But one day, Mis' Lela passed away and the little girl was very sad as she sees everyone crying and sees Mis' Lela still, laying in her bed. But she keeps the memory of Mis' Lela in her by walking by the house where she lived everyday and saying hi to Mis' Lela as if she was sitting on the front porch like she always was.

This is book is very touching and emotional. It reminds me of how my grandmother and I were when my father left us at her house while he went to work. It made me really sad when Mis' Lela died and when the little girl asked questions about her, it reminded of my little sister asking if my grandmother was sleeping or dreaming after she died. The artwork was enjoyable due to it's texture of colors.

This is a good book to read to a class when a child's member of the family passes away. This is also a good book to teach children how to cope with death.
