- Ida Bindschedler was born in Zurich to a wealthy Swiss merchant family. She trained as a teacher and after taking some additional language courses in Paris, she taught at a private girls' school in Zurich for 24 years. After her retirement at age 43 due to a heart condition, she moved to Augsburg, Germany, and began writing stories for children. Her books Die Turnachkinder im Sommer (1909), followed by Die Turnachkinder im Winter (1910), made her as popular a writer in her own day as Johanna Spyri, the author of Heidi.
