Hauptfigur ist der zu Beginn neunjährige Esau Matt, der als Erzähler durch die Handlung führt. Im Sommer 1919 zieht die Familie Esaus von Grausteen (Graustein) nach Bossdom, wo die Eltern einen Kramladen mit Bäckerei erworben haben. Dies geschah mit großer finanzieller Unterstützung vom Großvater, der mit seiner Frau ebenfalls im Haus wohnt. Weder Vater Heinrich noch Mutter Lenchen haben aber kaufmännisches Geschick und müssen sich deshalb immer wieder Geld vom Großvater leihen, ohne es zurückzahlen zu können.

Der Vater hat eine Affäre mit dem Kindermädchen Hanka, in das auch Esau verliebt ist. Aber auch Lenchens ein wenig zurückgebliebener Bruder Phile, der spät aus dem Krieg zurückkommt, hat ein Auge auf Hanka geworfen.

Nachdem der konservative Dorflehrer Rumposch durch einen fortschrittlicheren und engagierteren Lehrer ausgetauscht wurde, entdeckt dieser, dass Esau Talent zum Schreiben hat. Er regt an, dass Esau zukünftig auf die Hohe Schule in Spremberg geht.

Im zweiten Teil ist Esau 16 Jahre alt. Er wohnt in Spremberg bei einer Jugendfreundin seiner Mutter und geht dort auf die Höhere Schule. Zum ersten Mal ist er ernsthaft verliebt, in Ilonka Spadi. Sie scheint seine Gefühle zu erwidern, kokettiert aber auch mit einem Mitschüler Esaus sowie einem Lehrer mit NS-Gesinnung. Aus Enttäuschung darüber verlässt Esau die Schule.

Im dritten Teil kehrt Esau aus dem Krieg zurück. Sein Bruder Tinko wohnt mit seiner Frau Elvira ebenfalls im Elternhaus. Elvira ist zwar ein Organisationstalent, aber auch ein Luder, das (erfolglos) auch Esau verführen will. Der von Esau sehr verehrte Großvater ist dement geworden und erkennt Esau nicht wieder. Die Frau seines Bruders Heinjak wurde von sowjetischen Soldaten vergewaltigt und ist deshalb schwanger. Esau beginnt eine Beziehung mit der Gemeindeschwester. Doch als sich herausstellt, dass Nona, mit der er während des Krieges ein Verhältnis hatte, ein Kind von ihm bekam, stellt er sich der Verantwortung. Er weiß lange nicht recht, wie er mit der neuen Situation als Ehemann und Vater umgehen soll. Immerhin kann er gelegentlich dem Schreiben nachgehen, aber erst nach Fürsprache durch seinen alten Dorflehrer Rumposch und als er in die SED eintritt, kann er sein Talent in einen Beruf umwandeln, als Redakteur einer Zeitung. Berlin, 1943. After the death of her husband in a concentration camp, the Jewish Anna is left fending for herself and her young son Michael in the Nazi-ravaged city. 1944. Mentre la Germania si avvia verso un progressivo declino nella seconda guerra mondiale, sette coraggiosi soldati: il colonnello Claus von Stauffenberg, il generale Henning von Tresckow, il tenente Werner von Haeften, il generale Friedrich Olbricht, il generale Ludwig Beck, il colonnello Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim, il generale Erich Fellgiebel e molti altri gerarchi delle SS architettano un piano per assassinare Adolf Hitler e salvare la Germania dalla dittatura. L'attentato si sarebbe svolto nella città di Rastenburg, innescando una bomba a tempo nella tana del lupo di Hitler.
Rastenburg, 20 luglio 1944. Il giorno dell'attentato il colonnello Stauffenberg e gli altri ufficiali attendono l'esplosione e la morte del dittatore e del capo della polizia Heinrich Himmler, il quale si trova insieme a Hitler. Ma ciò non avviene poiché il rientro del Führer è posticipato per l'inaspettata visita di Benito Mussolini, il quale, nonostante l'armistizio si sente ancora un forte alleato di Adolf Hitler. Dopo poco tempo, mentre il podestà si trova in riunione con il Duce avviene l'esplosione sotto gli occhi di Stauffenberg e Haeften, i quali credono che Hitler e Himmler siano morti.
Il piano fallisce quando il maggiore Otto Remer parla direttamente al telefono con il Führer, il quale gli ordina di catturare i traditori e di farli fucilare. In breve tempo Remer, affiancato da altri gerarchi cattura Stauffenberg e gli altri e li consegna alla giustizia. Claus von Stauffenberg, Werner von Haeften, Friedrich Olbricht e Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim verranno fucilati il 21 luglio 1944, mentre Henning von Tresckow si suiciderà con una granata, Ludwig Beck porrà fine alla sua vita sparandosi un colpo di pistola alla nuca, Erich Fellgiebel verrà di seguito impiccato e Friedrich Fromm verrà fucilato nel 1945 con l'accusa di codardia di fronte al nemico. La storia dell'"Operazione Valchiria", ovvero l'attentato organizzato dal colonnello Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg e altri ufficiali cospiratori ai danni di Adolf Hitler. Messo in atto il 20 luglio 1944 l' attentato fallì miseramente.

Basato sui ricordi d'infanzia di Michael Degen, il film narra il modo in cui lui e la madre sopravvissero nella Germania nazista dopo la morte del padre, deceduto poco dopo essere stato internato nel lager di Sachsenhausen nel 1940. Per la paura di venire deportati, Michael e la madre, con documenti falsi, si nascondono di casa in casa, grazie a dei Berlinesi coraggiosi.
