When the revered children's book author Mort Lear dies accidentally at his Connecticut home, he leaves his property and all its contents to his trusted assistant, Tomasina Daulair, who is moved by his generosity but dismayed by the complicated and defiant directives in his will. Tommy knew Morty for more than four decades, since meeting him in a Manhattan playground when she was twelve and he was working on sketches for the book that would make him a star. By the end of his increasingly reclusive life, she found herself living in his house as confidante and helpmeet, witness not just to his daily routines but to the emotional fallout of his strange boyhood and his volatile relationship with a lover who died of AIDS. Now Tommy must try to honor Morty's last wishes while grappling with their effects on several people, including her estranged brother; the lonely, outraged museum curator to whom Lear once promised his artistic estate; and Nicholas Greene, the beguiling British actor cast to play Mort Lear in a movie. When Greene arrives for a visit, he and Tommy are compelled to look more closely at Morty's past, a process that undermines much of what Tommy believed she knew about her boss--and about herself. As she contemplates a future that will no longer include him, her unlikely alliance with Greene--and the loyalty they share toward the great man--will lead to surprising upheavals in their wider relationships, their careers, and even their search for love.… (altro)

(misplaced review I had started - will return...)

This book, plot or characters, doesn't work anywhere near the Classic Widower's Tale. ( )

A good audio book, it doesn't move too quickly (so in paper it might get boring) but still a good story about a personal assistant dealing with the aftermath of the death of a famous children's author/illustrator. There are many flashbacks, artfully done to make the story more interesting than if the whole thing had been chronological. There are also good forward jumps when the story needs to move along. Several characters take turns "narrating" via third person omniscient, and other than Meredith, their stories are also interesting. Apparently the author, Mort Lear, is inspired by [a:Maurice Sendak|4489|Maurice Sendak|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1201028880p2/4489.jpg] but their biographies are very different.
Light, first-world reading that is not completely fluff, so would be good in the summer. ( )

Absolutely loved the narrative, the bouncing between narrators and years. The entire time I was wishing that Ivo was a real character and that there was a physical copy of the fictitious book that I could get my hands on. ( )

When author and illustrator Mort Lear dies, his assistant Tomasina (Tommy) is left carrying out his wishes: rather than leave all his works and papers to a museum that has had much of his collection on loan for years, his will directs her to disperse it widely and use the funds to create a home for boys in the author's native Tuscon. Meanwhile, the museum curator is beside herself, and the actor playing Mort in an upcoming film wants to visit and learn as much as he can about the man himself for his performance - and seems to know a little more than even Tommy does about Mort's past.

Many of the books I read for my book club seem to tease out the question, "How well can you really know another person?" Well, this one does it in spades. Who really knows Mort Lear, and in the end is it really important to fully understand him? His character is at least partly based on Maurice Sendak, who was also gay and had loaned materials to The Rosenbach in Philadelphia who had to return items to his estate after a legal battle. This focuses most on the characters, however, and how their relationships intertwine but how ultimately no one really knows another person. ( )

The writing is lovely, but the story doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'm not interested in the characters or where the story is going, so I'm going to have to bail on this one.
