A guy goes to various planets with weird features. One is a gerontocracy where the older you are, the smarter you're presumed to be. Another is a society derived from, I think, the Bronx, where everyone talks in an exagerrated Bronx accent. Etc. The main character picks up one person from each society and they become a motley crew travelling together in order to, um, I forget what.

I read this in the early 1980s, so it was published before then.

The older-implies-prestige part and the motley-crew part correspond to Search the Sky by Frederik Pohl; the Bronx-accent part doesn't ring a bell but might be from the part set on Earth (which he eventually reaches). There was also a women-rule world and an everyone-looks-alike world. I don't have my copy available and can't check further.

Judging from the reviews on Amazon, that's it! Thanks, dukedom!
