Here's the spoiler thread for Uhura's Song. I'll be back when I am done.

Done. What great fun!
I wish there was a sequel, because I want to know what becomes of Evan. :oD

Just checked with hubby. It's the only book she appeared in. Boo hiss!

I loved the book, but was rather underwhelmed with the lack of story of the reactions of the exiles to meeting up with the original homeworlders. I would have liked to read more on that.

#3 - Same here, that's another reason I was hoping there was a sequel.

What a great story, Evan and Brightspot are delightful characters, so vivacious. I am disappointed to hear there isn't a sequel as well, 'cause it certainly reads like it's set up for one.

Evan sort of reminds me of Picard's archeologist "girlfriend" for lack of a better word - and I can't think of her name - she went off with Q. She was very vivacious and broke the rules and boundaries too.

#5 - Oh yeah, I remember her. Wait was she an archeologist of a geologist... or a geographer... Oh, I am all confused.

Wait, wasn't she a Stellar Cartographer???

*wanders off to google*

7clamairy
Mar 5, 2009, 11:39 am

I guess that was a different girlfriend! LOLOL
No Q in the Stellar Cartogropher girlfriend episode.

Mar 5, 2009, 11:48 am

Yeah, the Stellar Cartographer girlfriend played the piano and was really nice. The archeologist who went off with Q wasn't quite so nice, she was more of a rebel. She and Picard met on Rigel (wink wink).

I am so truly a geek. My daughters would just be sooo laughing right now and shaking their heads at me!! LOLOL

I'm not laughing!
:o)
I'll have to refresh my memory when I get back!

11katylit
Mar 5, 2009, 11:58 am

Found her! Vash! and Picard met her on Risa not Rigel. Thank goodness for the Star Trek site :-)

Mar 5, 2009, 1:51 pm

Oh, I remember that name now...

Let me do some memory refreshing. ;o)

13clamairy

She is (was) very lovely!

She travelled off with Q, but broke up with him in an early Deep Space 9 episode (the one where Sisko punches Q in a boxing match)

I too always thought a sequel was intended. Maybe someday..... In the meantime, I did enjoy the world Kagan created. The rituals, the culture, the characters were wonderful. I was really fond of Rushlight.

There were many endearing characters, Rushlight, Brightspot and Jinx especially were my favourites.

I liked the concept of a song being a gift, something an individual owned and treasured and gave with permission.

I loved this book! The characters and rich and charming.

MerryMary and Katylit - I agree with each of you about the world Kagan created and songs being treasured.

This was a good comfort read even though I had never read a StarTrek book. The characters were familiar and Kagan was wonderful at bringing out their unique personalities.

#17 - "This was a good comfort read even though I had never read a StarTrek book."

Yep. I won't be as shy about venturing into another, I think. You?

19JPB
Mar 14, 2009, 2:58 pm

Yes! The better Star Trek books are very good 'comfort reads' - just like Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Who, etc. That's the whole point of 'media-based books' - you know everything about the characters, and it's like hanging out with family. :)

20GeorgiaDawn
Mar 14, 2009, 4:05 pm

clam - I definitely will read more Star Trek books. It was fun.

Georgia: Yay! My work here is done.

23GeorgiaDawn
Mar 15, 2009, 7:31 pm

MerryMary - There is no hope of my TBR pile every being under control. Now I have to add all of the Star Trek books! Are you to blame for this?

24clamairy
Mar 15, 2009, 7:38 pm

#23 - ALL? No, only the good ones... LOL

25GeorgiaDawn
Mar 15, 2009, 8:07 pm

#24 - But how do we know what the good ones are? I guess we could ask MrMorphy and JPB. :)

I asked MrMorphy and he said he'll get a short list together.

Thank him profusely for us, Morphy.

May I humbly recommend Ishmael? I dearly love that one!

Am I to blame? Maybe. I've done worse in my life. Not a bad epitaph: "She brought Star Trek books to the attention of GeorgiaDawn - to her everlasting gratitude!"

Darn! I've been lurking around this group for a while but somehow missed this thread. Coincidentally, I reread Uhura's Song this month as well because my ten-year-old daughter saw it on my shelf and expressed interest. So I pulled out the dog-eared copy and reread it first to make sure it's appropriate. I'd forgotten what a delightful read this is! I'm sorry I missed the discussion here in "real time" but I'm glad you all seemed to enjoy it, too. And by Elath, it's a crime that there is no sequel!

So... What are we reading next? :-)

MerryMary, I will definitely read Ishmael based on your recommendation. Thank you!

And yes, you have my everlasting gratitude. :)

Mar 28, 2009, 2:28 pm

Ishmael!!! I just read the reviews and it combines Star Trek with Here Comes the Brides!!!!! Oh. My. Goodness. MerryMary, how perfect is that? Another show my sister and I used to watch together when we were young - oh the crush we used to have on all the Bolt brothers. I always liked the oldest one best -Jason - and was so tickled when he appeared in one Star Trek episode Lazarus.

I'll be reading it too GeorgiaDawn!

33GeorgiaDawn
Mar 28, 2009, 4:30 pm

I have a hold placed for Ishmael through ILL at my library

34MerryMary
Mar 28, 2009, 5:56 pm

Seriously, girls. I can't tell you how I feel right now. A warm glow probably best describes it. A favorite book and some favorite people together for the first time - and I get the credit! How cool is that?

35katylit
Mar 28, 2009, 6:33 pm

Bask in the glow dear lady, bask. You certainly deserve it.

And Morphy too! We're waiting to get those recommendations when your husband gets a chance. I really had forgotten how great these Star Trek books are for escaping for awhile :-)

Mar 28, 2009, 7:40 pm

I have the book but haven't had a chance to read it; maybe while I'm traveling over the next three days. I just wanted to say to GeorgiaDawn that MerryMary's absolutely correct about Ishmael. I *heartily* enjoyed it some 20 years ago.

37GeorgiaDawn
Mar 28, 2009, 8:08 pm

Thanks, jillmwo! Hopefully it will be in at the library soon!

Hubby says that nothing is really as good as Uhura's Song but otherwise, here are his recommendations:

Original Series
The Vulcan Academy Murders
The Romulan Way

Next Generation
Ship of the Line

Lost Era
2298 - The Sundered

Titan
Taking Wing

Welcome, lauawill!!! Please join in anyway, despite the fact that most of us are done.

I just loved that phrase "By Elath!"
:o)

Morphy, give MrMorphy a big hug!

P.S. Lost Era is about Sulu and Titan is Riker's ship.

GD, done!

Wonderful, thanks Morphy and MrMorphy - a hug from me too :-)

38: The Romulan Way is the sequel to My Enemy, My Ally. Both are good. I think both are collected as part of Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages along with the rest of the series, except the last one.

I'm going to have to find a copy of Uhura's Song to reread it.
