I met Don Webb in person a few times when I lived in Austin back around the turn of the millennium. I genuinely enjoy his work, and I think I have significant sympathy for his creative process as an occultist writing fiction. In this case, I think I've also met in person the real-life model for his Maya character.
This story is like one of several more recently written by Jeffrey Ford (I have in mind particularly "Five-Pointed Spell") where the narrating main character has the name and general trappings of the author. "The Sound of Door Opening" fuses that approach with the illuminated anticipation characteristic of the coda of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth." Nice work!
