I enjoyed this one just fine.

Despite the little trappings of yog-sothothery, this story seemed to be purely about a monstrosity. The sentiment at the end seemed almost to be pandering to Joshi's construal of the Lovecraftian ethos.

The narrator appears to be yet another bachelor, though not a wealthy one.

One wonders what the Old Gods’ purpose is to send the seed to lurk. Merely to mess with mortals?

I guess I was a little underwhelmed.

I had questions whether Malcolm was acting on some ancestral compulsion given he got the book from his grandfather.

Or is he just fatally curious or despondent and that’s why he chose to pray to the Old Gods? Malcolm says that, like the narrator, he has no “conventional religious beliefs”. But has he harbored unconventional ones for a while?
