Ballet Shoes, A Story of Three Children on the Stage by Noel Streatfeild 2009

This delightful children’s book was read by my wife when she was ten, and she still loves it.

The novel follows the lives of three orphan girls who were adopted by an eccentric millionaire collector of fossils. They were sent to live with a nanny and guardian in a massive central London house that was crowded with his archaeological finds before he set off on another voyage of discovery. When he fails to return and the money set aside to support them all and the house runs out, an eclectic group of boarders are taken in to make ends meet, and these boarders change the children’s lives, sending them in a totally unexpected direction.

The xiv + 206 page book is beautifully illustrated with a frontispiece, six full-page colour illustrations and eight black & white tailpieces by Inga Moore. It is introduced by Jacqueline Wilson and 3/4 bound in purple cloth with Modigliani paper sides printed and blocked with a colour design by Inga Moore. There is also a gilt blocked design on the back cover. The endpapers are dark pink and the purple slipcase measures 23.7x154.5cm.

Thank you so much for the above extended post. I had never read this book but with my second (or is third?) childhood arriving, it looks an excellent read.
