This is probably old news to many of you, but I just joined BookMooch a couple days ago and I'm already slated to receive 5 free books.

The way it works is this: you start by listing the books you own but no longer want. You send out the ones other people request from your list and people ship you the ones you want from their lists. It's very simple (and free, unless you count paying to ship books to people) and goes by a point system so nobody can be overly greedy and take a lot more than they give.

Be aware that if you post a lot of books to your inventory at once, you may also get a lot of requests all at once and the postage can add up if you have popular books that people want.

If you're just starting out you may want to post a few books at a time over the course of a month or so to lessen the chance you'll get stuck with a ton of shipping charges right off the bat.

Yes, I noticed that happening. I was prepared to send out many of my books quickly, though, as that means more points with which to get books I desire.

Yeah, my usual sources of books are substantially cheaper than shipping on trades would be, which is the main reason I haven't got involved in any of the swap sites.

Well, that's lovely! I only wish used book shops around here sold the books I wanted for less than $2.13 (the price to send a book media mail through the USPS). I don't ship internationally, so the cost of shipping is pretty low for me, plus I'm only getting "premeditated" books I know I truly want - less chance of impulse buying.

Do you usually find books for

Not at book shops, though you can sometimes get them for around $1 at used book shops if you don't mind limiting yourself to the bargain shelves (where I've found some really good stuff on occasion.) Online's always going to have the shipping cost, so it's never less than media mail. But in my area, books at library sales/thrift shops/rummage sales/flea markets are usually still in the range of $.10-$1.00 for paperbacks and $.25-$2.00 for hardcovers, though they've been inching toward the high end of that range lately. There's also a big used book warehouse in the nearest city where you can just walk in and take all you want for free! You've just gotta know where to look. And be *absolutely* dirt cheap. :D Bookmooch sounds like fun if you're not absolutely dirt cheap, though.
