I’m trying to identify a children’s picture book that I once read (read probably 1990-2000). The book’s setting is vaguely medieval. I seem to remember that the hero is forced to spend the night outside a village in some supernaturally dangerous place or time. The climax occurs when a giant knight made out of wicker or bundles of sticks or straw appears and engages something in battle. I can’t remember much more than this.

I know this one I think! Give me a bit...
The kid wants to be a knight, but his dad is a basket-weaver or someone who works with wicker/plants. The knights besiege a castle or something and the kid and his dad build a giant wicker knight to scare them away. Moral at the end is that being a farmer isn't worthless.

Oh, I have this cataloged in my LT virtual library. It's listed in the 'YA read but unowned' shelf. I think the author's first name is Harold or Henry. I'll edit this post if I can find it with a quick search. If not, you can skim my collection for it.
Found it. The author's name is Donald Carrick. The book is Harald and the Giant Knight.

That's the one I remembered, yep.
Hope it's the right one for Foretopman!

That's the one alright. RowanTribe's description was much better than mine. Thank you Diana.n.
