Hi, I'm trying to remember a book I read as a kid, hope you guys can help.

The people in the society have memory packs on their back wired I guess into their brain, and school consists of downloading information. The main character is the child of the leader of this society, who watches a friend "fail" the exams when he freaks out and can't take the information. Those who fail become slaves. Slaves wear their hair long, while regular members have their heads shaved. The boy falls into a river, I believe, and is swept downstream where he is rescued by a colony of escaped slaves. They teach him that the information they download is all controlled by his father, who determines who is to become a slave and who is not. At one point, he touches his unshaven head and says, "Ugh, I look like a slave" and at another point when he realizes that it is all controlled by his father, he rips out the memory pack. He returns to his city eventually and drops a yellow package of seeds into the river where he knows it will sweep downstream to the escaped slaves for them to use.

It would seem I have a lot of information to help with a google search but darned if I can find this one. Anyone have an idea?

Monica Hughes, Devil on my Back.

My favourite (and by that author) is actually the sequel, Monica Hughes, The Dream Catcher. I happened to read that first, but it did not matter in the end to me which was read first! They are both great science fiction stories.
