Six Early Literacy Skills
1. PRINT MOTIVATION / LOVE BOOKS: Print motivation is being interested in, having fun with, enjoying and developing a love of books
2. PRINT AWARENESS / PRINT: Print awareness is understanding that the squiggles on the page that are letters mean something, noticing that print is everywhere (not just in books) and knowing how to handle a book
3. VOCABULARY / NEW WORDS: Vocabulary is knowing the names of things, emotions, concepts and ideas
4. LETTER KNOWLEDGE / ALPHABET: Letter knowledge knowing that letters look different from each other and that they are different shapes and knowing the letters' names and sounds
5. PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS / SOUNDS OF WORDS: Phonological awareness is hearing and playing with the smaller sounds in words like in rhymes
6. NARRATIVE SKILLS / TELLING STORIES: Narrative skills is being able to describe things and events and tell stories in the child's own words

1) AT HOME: for parents to read aloud bedtime stories to their children every night
2) AT DAYCARE: for daycare providers to read aloud to the children they care for everyday
3) AT THE LIBRARY: for parents and caregivers to bring children to library storytimes
