This is a virtual legacy library of the historian George Lichtheim. According to Walter Laqueur, Lichtheim claimed that he would never quote a book unless he had it in his library. This legacy library is therefore being created on the basis of quotations contained in George Lichtheim’s writings, including his reviews. Discretion is also being used to add books which, while not specifically quoted, are referenced in his work and one can reasonably conclude would have been in his library, given his intellectual and scholarly interests. The book or other source containing the quotation or other reference is noted in the tags. The location of the quote within the book is contained in the comments. A brief summary of Lichtheim's commentary, if any, on a book is also included along with the date in parentheses. An effort is being made to review Lichtheim's writings in chronological order.
