This is a new edition of the German translation of a book that first appeared in French in 2001. It offers a careful look at the most familiar Christian text, the Lord’s Prayer. Zumstein demonstrates how the prayer is an expression of first-century Jewish piety, yet a reflection of the individual message of Jesus. In doing so, the author maintains a delicate balance throughout. Only when treating the petition, “lead us not into temptation (or, “sore trial”),” does the author underplay the extent to which Jesus shared the apocalyptic expectation of his fellow Jews, even though even here, as Zumstein stresses, “Was ihn interessiert, ist die gute Botschaft vom befreienden Kommen Gottes in die Gegenwart.”
The book is accessible to the general reader yet is based on the author’s characteristic exegetical and hermeneutical precision. Anyone with a reading knowledge of German (or better yet, French to be able to read the original, for Zumstein is a careful stylist) would profit from reading it.

This book offers a brief overview of the singular way the Fourth Gospel presents the meaning of the life and work of Jesus. Zumstein concludes that the author was one of the first grand interpreters of Jesus of Nazareth. Aimed at the general reader, this book forgoes a scholarly apparatus to ground its claims, yet there are clear references to the passages in the Gospel on which they are based. Still, there is one point where the reader might have wished for more background: In the final chapter, when Zumstein tests the validity of the Fourth Gospel's interpretation, he compares the historical Jesus to the Jesus portrayed by the fourth evangelist. The reader, having just read that we only know of Jesus what others have written about him, might wonder at some of the assured conclusions presented about the message of Jesus.
Finally: as far as I, a non-native speaker, can judge, the text is beautifully written -- it is a pleasure to read.
