Richard Winters

At first I wasn't sure what to make of this novel.It has an old-fashioned quality that reminds me of books I had read in the past. But then I just went with it, and am glad I did.

Winter writes deeply beautiful descriptions of nature and the country. It is obvious that Winters loves the outdoors. I assume he must have lived a life with full access to woods, hills, fields, streams, farms, and the variety of animal life one would find in these environments.

But when writing about people his language and style are very different; spare, simple and unpretentious. This reductionist style actually works brilliantly to accentuate the complex feelings of human pain, sadness, raw emotion, need, and love.

Winters doesn't waste words. He uses them wisely producing a strong book with realistic, hard-working and almost noble characters.
