The dream of salvation through revolution has fascinated creative writers since the time of the great poets who lived during the French Revolution of 1789. Why is this so? The very nature of the writer's situation, his solitude and essential powerlessness, stimulates a tremendous longing for action, for power and revolutionary activity. Writers and Revolution deals with this intoxication with blood, apology for terror, admiration for the revolutionary despot, which can be found in the most gifted poets from Blake and Byron on. The rival claims of literature and revolution still confront one another, often within a single man (Sartre, for example), to produce a continuing crisis for today's literature. Writers themselves have thus helped to create a situation in which, ironically enough, literature is made to seem inferior to revolution.… (altro)
