William Woys Weaver is an organic gardener, food historian, and author of eight books -- including Heirloom Vegetable Gardening and Pennsylvania Dutch Country Cooking, both of which received Julia Child book awards for food reference. This book is about half history of Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine, half recipes.

Prior to moving to central Pennsylvania 4 years ago, my knowledge of local food was a hazy awareness of shoofly pie and chicken potpie, and a touch of cynicism about the boasts of "Lancaster County!" on eggs sold in New York City. This was an interesting overview of what Dutch cuisine really is and how our image of Dutch culture and cuisine--and its popular attachment to the Amish--was manufactured, often by outsiders.… (altro)

A nice mixture of history and historical recipes updated for modern ingredients (and to a lesser extent tastes). I took notes throughout and then decided that I'm not even going to attempt any of the recipes this year, but I enjoyed the book anyway.

Fascinating historical survey of American folk cooking, with recipes. Photos of some of the dishes and cookware. Great stories and quotes about the evolution of American dishes.

An excellent, and extensive book of heirloom vegetables (almost 500 pages!). The author has been saving old vegetable varieties his entire life, with some of the seeds from his grandfather from the 1930's! He also includes a very comprehensive history of people saving seeds. The list of plants is very extensive, from artichokes to yams. Each vegetable gets a thorough discussion.
This is the kind of book that you want to read over and over again, especially when one is stuck inside on a cold winter day, and are dreaming of what to plant in the spring.… (altro)
