There were a few things I really enjoyed about this volume, like the critique of the riot grrl movement and the little jokes about mermaid tech, as well as the first issue that explained how the girls met! I wasn’t a fan of the illustration style in chapters 18-20 as much as I was with ch 17. Overall this wasn’t the best that Lumberjanes has to offer, but this volume was still a good message. While I was reading, I couldn’t help but feel like this was kind of a filler arc, so I can’t wait to get back to the real meat of the story soon. Friendship to the max!

To me this was a lot better than volume 5. I can definitely feel something big coming, hopefully in the next volume and I can’t wait til Dec to get it. Now that there are no new volumes I’ll be sure to get my hands on the single issues asap. Also, I really liked the lore that was used in this volume as I knew a bit about it before going in. Overall, super cute and fun as always!

This was a perfect read for the beginning of October because of the scary stories the girls told in the beginning! I was especially excited about Molly’s telling of the Tailypo legend since I heard about it on an episode of Spirits Podcast. It was so cool to see it illustrated. My favorite part of this volume was the amount of interaction between Molly and Mal. They are so super cute, to the max! At first I didn’t like the change in illustration style from the first two volumes to this one, but aspects of it grew on me. Separate from that, I really liked the way the styles changed when each girl was narrating their story and how the individual style fit with the tone of the story! Overall this was a great read

I got this in my Summer Reads box from Goodreads.

It's about quirky girls at summer camp having mysterious adventures and it's done in the form of graphic novel/comic mixed with info from the Lumberjanes handbook.

I wanted to like this but I needed more intro. I felt like I was thrown into this midstream instead of in the beginning. I was confused about who the girls were and by their strange lingo.

I think I'm really just not a graphic novel person.

This was EXTREMELY CUTE. I'm not sure if I'll read more - or if I even would have enjoyed it when I was a preteen*; I was not into cute - but it was a fun, clever read.

*This word just percolated into my consciousness. There was no such thing as "tween" yet when I was a lass. I think I prefer "tween"; "preteen" makes me think of training bras and other middle school awkwardness.

This was an adorable and funny book that I would definitely recommend. It's a fun story along the lines of Squirrel Girl and Giant Days, and a good "intro to comics" book. I was disappointed the story arc didn't resolve in the first volume, though, I guess that just means I will have to read keep reading.

RGG: More of a comic than a graphic novel. Reading Interest: 11-14.

With this third volume of the Lumberjanes series, I really enjoyed all the different illustration styles, but as far as the rest, it was just "ok" for me. I feel like the story in the first two volumes was much more connected to each other and made more of an overarching plot, while this one seemed kind of jumbled up and random.

There wasn't anything that I particularly found really funny like in the previous two volumes either, which was a big draw to this series for me. The dialogue is still quirky, but it seemed as though it hit a little bit too much above the mark of quirkiness where it doesn't fit together quite right. Furthermore, the bit at the beginning with the scary stories was pretty boring to me because they weren't remotely scary and yet the characters were getting scared and kept telling more of the same type of stories.

I really enjoyed the bond between the group as a whole in the first two volumes as well, so with this one splitting the group up, a lot of that was also missing. While I think Mal and Molly are cute together, I missed seeing the group work off of each other as a whole.

In a way it is difficult to describe what seemed so different overall with this volume that made me like it less than the ones before. Perhaps to best sum it up would be to say that the story felt more like pieces put together in a mismatched sort of way, as well as the humor seeming off. I was really enjoying the series thus far so was a bit disappointed with this addition, but I may still keep reading and see where it goes from here.

Just like the first volume, volume 2 of Lumberjanes was awesome. I still loved the art style, characters, dialogue, camp theme, chapter openers, humor, and expressiveness of this comic series. I didn't have as many laugh-out-loud moments in this one as the first one but it did contain a lot of the same type of random humor reminiscent of Adventure Time. I loved particularly how the mystery has been playing out, I think the journey through figuring it out and the resolution were both a perfect fit for this comic and that it really worked to balance it out a bit while also staying true to its main themes. All in all this series is just FUN and it makes me want to go to a camp like this, even though I'm too old for it. Would definitely recommend, and in fact have done so to many people already.

Had this one recommended to me and I really enjoyed it! It had me laughing several times and I loved the chapter intros which were from the actual "Lumberjanes Field Manual" and the types of badges the campers could get. I liked the mystery of it as well and am curious to find out "what the junk" is going on in the next installment. The artwork was very vibrant and I loved the facial expressions the characters would make. They seem to make a really good team and kind of remind of a "Scooby gang." Overall, probably what I loved most was the humor, which I found to be quite adventure time-esque, and the camp theme that even carried over into the intros. I am just really hoping that the mystery ends up being something really intricate to throw that element in there to balance out the light heartedness.

This was an interesting re-telling of the classic Sleepy Hollow tale. A fun read as we head into fall and the Halloween season.

I sort of thought this comic was going to be more about a group of girls empowered by hanging out at a camp in the woods. Which I guess it is, but I maybe should have known (since it is, after all, a comic book) that it would actually be more supernatural than natural. In this volume the Janes learn that there is a goddess in their midst (and a god too, neither of them acting particularly majestic). The story includes a good dose of puzzle solving and more Indiana Jones type adventuring, as the first volume did, which is entertaining enough for me to be curious where the next installment will take me. I did get one LOL moment, which made my lunch break.

I still don't have all the characters straight in my mind, which might partly be because the art changes for every story. Each character has her own individual look and, to some extent, personality, but they still kind of blend together for me. The stories in this volume are a little less supernatural than the previous offerings-- though some of the girls do run into the shape-shifting Bear Woman, and adventure and hilarity ensue. Meanwhile the rest of the gang just can't seem to earn any mundane badges (such as "absence makes the heart grow fondant"-- if only Girl Guides of Canada has badges with such creative and evocative names!). This volume also introduces a budding romance between two of the Janes-- kind of inevitable under the circumstances!

I love to see stories that show girls having adventures and being empowered and irreverent, and this graphic novel fills the bill. With engaging art and a fun story, we are introduced to this group of intrepid campers who encounter some booby traps worthy of Indiana Jones and creatures that may not be quite of this world. But, borrowing some tricks from science, math and language, they find their way through. The titular mystery is only partially unraveled in this volume, so I look forward to the next installment!
