This was a marvelous read--well-written, thoroughly researched, and rich in detail. However, without maps it was difficult to get an accurate picture in my mind of the dispositions and movements of troops. I would wish also that Walsh had included the order of battle for at least some of the engagements he describes, as the frequent reorganizations (especially in the south) made it very difficult to track specific units' whereabouts. Otherwise, I loved it and highly recommend it.

Exhaustive account of the Civil War from the Confederate Army. Not a quick read, but it does give a human face to those- especially the Confederates. The scary part about this is that had it not been for arrogance and dumb mistakes from the Confederate Army, the North could have been crushed. The one real criticism I have about this book is that I wish it had more of an introduction to what brought about the war. More development would have made this book even better. Still it is a decent read.
