850 páginas de la historia del activista comunista Manos Simonidis y de la particular militancia que llevan a cabo este personaje y sus camaradas bajo la amenza de la intelligence británica en las tres "ciudades a la deriva": Jerusalén, El Cairo y Alejandría. En torno a Simonidis rotan una pléyade de personajes: griegos de la diáspora, europeos, judíos y árabes que enriquecen el relato con sus propias vivencias, entre el tremendismo y la ternura. La novela no está exenta de dificultad, sobre todo cuando proliferan las referencias a los entresijos de la politica griega en el exilio, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Los personajes femeninos que coprotagonizan la historia están desarrollados con maestría: Emmy, aristócrata austriaca entregada al libertinaje, Ariadna, madre coraje de la comunidad griega de El Cairo, Nancy, amante inglesa de Manos, Julia, mujer murciélago de la comunidad griega de Alejandría. Para leer con paciencia, motivación e interés por la historia de la Grecia moderna. No exenta de un lirismo conmovedor que, personalmente, me ha recordado la narrativa mediterránea oriental: Mahfuz, Kazantzakis..… (altro)
