2023 City of Regina Award Winner
Review of the Palimpsest Press paperback (May, 2022)

The Sunday Book is Michael Trussler's 2nd essay collection. It has a crossover with his other recent book The History Forest (University of Regina Press, September 2022) as the essay Bodhisattva on a Bicycle appears in both volumes. This was the City of Regina Award Winner from our reading for the 2023 Saskatchewan Book Awards. Our Jury Recommendation written for the City of Regina Award Shortlist was:

Michael Trussler’s memoir in essays, The Sunday Book, offers unique insights into the “simultaneity” of historical and contemporary events. He ponders what it means “to conceive of the Holocaust in the twenty-first century.” Told through the lens of NLVD (non-verbal learning disorder), a developmentally-based disorder with which Trussler was diagnosed in adulthood, the essays—some in fragments that ultimately come together in articulate discontinuity—are a call to gratitude and humility.

I obtained a free copy of this book through the Saskatchewan Book Awards where it was a nominee for the City of Regina Award, for which I participated in a jury of 3 readers. This book was one of 5 which made our Shortlist and it was the eventual winner. We agreed to embargo our participation and opinions until after the Award Announcements on May 4, 2023.

Trivia with Link above
The Sunday Book was also the winner of the 2023 Non-Fiction Award of the Saskatchewan Book Awards as listed in the Award Announcements above.

Encounters (NeWest Press, 2006) an earlier book of short fiction by Michael Trussler was the winner of the 2006 City of Regina Award and the Book of the Year Award from the Saskatchewan Book Awards.

Poetry Winner
Review of the University of Regina Press paperback (September, 2022)

The History Forest is Michael Trussler's 4th poetry collection. It has a crossover with his other recent book [book:The Sunday Book|59395889] (Palimpsest Press, May 2022) as the essay Bodhisattva on a Bicycle appears in both volumes. Trussler's poetry is often abstract, but is inspired by real world events and concerns and often by the simple observance of nature, especially birds. This was a favourite of our reading for the 2023 Saskatchewan Book Awards. Our Jury Recommendation written for the City of Regina Award Shortlist was:

Michael Trussler’s latest poetry collection, The History Forest, acts as a companion piece to his memoir essay work. His love of birds and nature are extended to his concern for their and our own survival in the current tumultuous world. He views them all with empathy and compassion in these engaging and often mind-bending stretches of imagination which challenge us with their wide-ranging references and allusions.

Although The History Forest did not win the Saskatchewan 2023 City of Regina Award, it did win the Saskatchewan 2023 Poetry Award Honouring Ann Szumigalski.

Trivia and Link
Author Michael Trussler reads his poem “As Unnoticed as Possible” from The History Forest at the University of Regina Press’s YouTube channel here.

The History Forest was published as part of the University of Regina Press’ Oskana Poetry and Poetics Series. The series is described as: “Publishing new and established authors, Oskana Poetry & Poetics offers both contemporary poetry at its best and probing discussions of poetry’s cultural role. Oskana is the Cree word for "bones," and we use it with the blessing of Elder Noel Starblanket. The name reflects our commitment to speak to the deepest and most urgent issues of our time, including environmental crisis and Indigenous justice.
The series seeks original manuscripts in English from both new and established Canadian authors. It also welcomes works of literature translated from First Nations and other Indigenous North American languages. The requirement of Canadian citizenship does not apply to the authors or translators of such works.
Typically, URP publishes two books per year in the Oskana series.”
