This book can be treated like a reference manual for minimal BASIC as it existed in the 1970s. All of the BASIC functions are in alphabetical order from ABS to VAL. All of the programming statements, commands, and functions are illustrated with examples and, more often than not, with flowcharts. The programs were tested on the MITS Altair 680 microcomputer.

This book is written with both professional and hobbyist programmers in mind. It is a practical handbook, not a theoretical manual.

Tracton describes his subroutines in the context of I/O variables, inline substitution, space-time trade-offs, future values, increments, and other matters that may affect a program's performance.

Tracton shows how his subroutines work in several programming disciplines: physics, chemistry, basic math, calculus, metric conversions, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and finances.

Once written, a subroutine can be duplicated wherever it is needed in a program. The mother program can call it as many times as it is needed.

These subroutines were written in a version of line-numbered BASIC that was compatible with TRS-80 Level II BASIC for Radio Shack's Model I Micro Computer.
