I want to admit up front that I decided to read this book based on the intriguing cover of a bear in a Russian Cossack hat, cigarette hanging out of his mouth and an AK 47 in his paws.

The story is about a pair of Americans visiting Russia for a business trip. Sibyl is a tarot card-reading, pill-popping Russian-speaker who is accompanying her corporate-fixer fiancé, Peter, to Russia as his translator while he closes a deal between his company and a Russian oligarch. Each character is described as a tarot card (Peter is Prince of Coins) but tarot knowledge isn't necessary. It's packed with intrigue, lies, betrayals, greed, and danger. Red Russia is one of those books you either connect with and love, or you hate every word and you wonder how it even got published.

The book is written with both Russian and English highlighted sections and I really liked the format and writing style. I thought it was a quick and hilarious story with a disappointing conclusion.

Red Russia by Tanya Thompson
Story starts out with Sybil and she and Peter are on their way to Russia. His company is allowing her to go as his translator.
She's into reading cards and many other forms of predicting things going on around her.
Very adult conversations and swearing. They land in Russia and the book translates for you what the foreign words mean.
Both English and Russian versions are available in the same book.
Many escapades as they are introduced to many involved in the talks they are sent there for. Lot of other deals go down as well.
Very confused about who is who as she's given the men a character name like Elvis, Fat Man, Ken, etc. Sounds comical til the guns start firing.
Drugs, drinking, and firearms are not good combinations. Fast paced story but to me it was more about the drugs and drinks and what foolish things people do when those are in use.
Book ends with highlights of works by the author.
Not into this genre but thought I'd give it a try.

Doing a good deed. Saving a life (even if it is a rodent). What could go wrong? Read this story for insight to what CAN go wrong. I totally enjoyed the story and I would recommend it to anyone who has a good sense of humor.

Assuming Names by Tanya Thompson
Book starts out with a story about a 15 year old girl. She's got quite the knowledge of how to do things in the 1980's to make her life easier.
Many thefts, impersonating others, multiple SSNs, passports and lots of cc's she is able to talk herself out of a psych ward and she travels the world. Remember this is in the 80's!
Liked the parts about the travel and where she ended up and how she was able to even accomplish the thefts, always blaming it on others.
Based on a true story. Lots of drugs, stealing while growing up and at times going to college.
Other works by the author are highlighted at the end along with links to excerpts of one other novel.
I received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
