This short story would be an excellent addition to an ELA unit on suspense. You could also use the story to extend into Colombian history or morality. It's also a good writing example of a cliffhanger ending as the final lines certainly leads to more questions than answers. Furthermore, there's a really nicely done short film on youtube by Jeff Hamil that would be an excellent companion to reading the story. The filmmaker made, what I think are, some really smart adaptation decisions that could lead to a discussion of adapting literature to film. In sum, this short story is an exciting piece that could be taken in multiple directions.
